Extreme heat conditions cause harm in our own community. Many Spokane residents are at risk for medical complications and life-threatening situations due to the lack of proper cooling resources in their own homes. This can be prevented! Support our community by contacting your City Council members at [email protected]. Help us to pass the Renters’ Right to Cooling Ordinance, and to assist those who need your support the most.

As we approach the 5th anniversary of the Northwest Heat Dome, it’s important to look to the future and implement more heat resilience measures to protect our community from the harmful effects of extreme heat. This is why we hope to pass Renters’ Right to Cooling Ordinance, which would require landlords to ensure rentals can maintain a safe summer temperature. Thank you to all our city council members and community supporters for being leaders in your spaces. Improving your indoor air quality can reduce your exposure to microscopic smoke particles. Here’s how:
- Close windows and doors
- Run a HEPA portable air cleaner or use a box fan with an attached MERV 13 filter
- Avoid burning candles, incense, or scented products
- Skip frying or broiling food
If it’s hot and smoky, use your cooling system if you have one. If you don’t have a way to stay cool at home, spend time in a cool location or seek shelter elsewhere. Find more information, including how to set up a Cleaner Air Room, at SmokeReadySpokane.org.
