There is lots of work to be done in the Rust Belt. Much restoration is underway.
But we need to shift our thinking. The work ethic of the tradesman can be used for the Lord. The working man may be the best candidate for leading us to greater things in Toledo. When a man is conditioned for hours of callousing work and is capable of thinking, reading, and writing well, he is deadly.
The Toledoan needs to be told his work matters. All of it.

Men feel trapped in the prison that is secondary school before they graduate and move on to the trades, thinking they‘ll be free at last from the dullness of John Dewey’s educational reforms.
Some find this freedom. Others find the same old system in the physical workplace.
But, just because school is now boring and everyone wants to turn you into a cog for the machine, Christians still must learn to think. Maybe the pursuit could be worth it once again. Maybe Dewey was wrong. Learning, for all ages, could even be fun.
We’re here to help. Go to ionastudycenter.org.

The Protestant Work Ethic shaped America’s cities, especially Toledo. The idea was built upon the Protestant teaching of vocation.
All the work God has given man to do under the sun, all vocations, are done on holy ground. The priesthood isn’t the only job that matters. Electricians, plumbers, doctors, engineers, homemakers, and scholars all have honorable vocations. All of that work is a calling from God.
What are you doing with your calling?

Our fellows program begins this September, where students will work to think like a Christian through the study of history, literature, Biblical theology, and music.
At Iona, we don’t settle for the saying, “I should read more.” It is not a matter of if you are reading. What are you reading? How are you reading?
And then, how are you thinking?
