The Difference Between Hearing Your Spouse and Understanding Your Spouse
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned in marriage is this:
Just because your spouse hears your words doesn’t mean they understand your heart.
Hearing is physical.
Understanding is emotional.
You can hear someone talk for an hour and still miss what they’re really trying to say.
For example:
A wife says,
“I feel like I’m doing everything by myself.”
A husband hears:
“She’s saying I’m a bad husband.”
But what she may actually mean is:
“I’m overwhelmed, and I need to know we’re in this together.”
Or a husband says,
“I just need some peace when I come home.”
A wife hears:
“He doesn’t want to spend time with me.”
But what he may actually mean is:
“I’ve been carrying so much today, and I need a moment to breathe before I can fully show up.”
That’s the difference.
Hearing focuses on the words.
Understanding looks for the need behind the words.
Many arguments continue because couples spend all their energy defending themselves instead of getting curious.
Instead of asking:
“How could you say that to me?”
Try asking:
“Help me understand what you’re feeling.”
Instead of preparing your response while your spouse is talking, listen long enough to hear the hurt, the fear, the disappointment, or the need underneath their words.
Because sometimes your spouse isn’t asking you to fix anything.
They’re asking:
“Can you see me?”
“Can you hear my heart?”
“Can you understand what I’m carrying?”
And when a husband and wife begin to understand each other, not perfectly, but intentionally, their marriage becomes a safer place.
After all, being understood is one of the deepest desires of the human heart.
And one of the greatest gifts you can give your spouse is not simply hearing their words…
It’s understanding their heart.
