Equity, excellence, and opportunity — three words that guide everything The NEA Foundation does.

This Pride Month, we recommit to those values for every student, every educator, and every school community. Justice in public education means ensuring every child belongs and every educator is supported.

What does equity look like in your school? Tell us in the comments.

Public education is strongest when educators lead.

Every program the NEA Foundation supports, from the Global Learning Fellowship to Grants to Educators, is built around that belief. Educators are not just implementers of policy. They are the architects of possibility.

This July, The NEA Foundation’s 2026 Global Learning Fellows are heading to South Africa.

Between July 18 and 27, the cohort will spend 10 days in Cape Town and Johannesburg, visiting primary and secondary schools, meeting South African educators, and immersing themselves in the history, culture, and communities that shape education across the country.

One of the school visits will bring the Fellows back to Inxiweni Primary School outside of Johannesburg — a school that welcomed GLF 2023 Fellows with an extraordinary celebration featuring 700+ students reciting the South African anthem and constitution. We cannot wait to return.

Follow along as we share the journey.

Today, as we celebrate World Environment Day, we're thinking about educators like Thomas Harten, a K-8 earth science educator in Calvert County, Maryland, who has spent more than two decades connecting students to the natural world through hands-on learning.

With support from an NEA Foundation Grant to Educators, Thomas and his fifth-grade students are doing more than studying the Chesapeake Bay — they are helping restore it. Students build 250-pound concrete reef balls in partnership with local scientists and conservation groups, then place them in the Bay to support oyster population recovery and contribute to scientific data collection.

That is environmental education. That is what public school educators make possible every day.

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
— Nelson Mandela

Public school educators wield that power every single day. In every lesson planned, every student supported, every community shown what is possible when learning is treated as a right and not a privilege.

The NEA Foundation is honored to stand alongside those who do this work.
