Pre-op bloodwork and physical for my surgery on the 24th.
Posting this as a reminder to advocate for yourself when it comes to your health.
I know it’s time-consuming and annoying, but it is worth it.

Rogue Corn
BY NIKKI WALLSCHLAEGER
My fav event as harvest season approaches
is the rough seed that escaped the plots.
If there’s a cornfield adjacent to another bed
of vegetables, you can count on imperfection,
you can see stalks standing where they’re
not supposed to be, the winds have ideas,
seeds who choose wildness, here they are,
with red potatoes, alfalfa, peas, sunflowers,
they look pleased w/ themselves, outfoxing
clever farmers, making it to the unplanned
ground where nobody is around, recovering
where the amiable dirt will welcome them.
Seeds are so fun and determined,
there’s no concept of liberty, no need for it,
guaranteed if I were a seedling I’d abstain,
you know I would, I’d find a way to renounce
what’s expected of my common name,
gliding over the roads until a dream takes root

The question isn’t why does this child need to control everything. The question is who taught them - without meaning to - that no one else would.
A child who manages every adult in the room isn’t powerful. They’re exhausted. Doing a job that was never theirs to do, with resources that were never built for it.
The most loving thing an adult can do is take that job back. Not harshly. Not as punishment. Just warmly, firmly, and with the quiet certainty of someone who is actually in charge.
That certainty is not control. It’s relief, for everyone - especially the child.

What’s most interesting about this piece is how everything is positioned and worded for the alcohol industry.
Your drinking keeps Big Alcohol going. They need you to be addicted. And they need to mess with data.
My kids will eye roll this if I talk about health. But if I talk about power and money? That makes them think. 🤔
Health Risks of Alcohol Accelerate After One Drink a Day, Study Finds
The alcohol industry has criticized the research, which found that even light drinking increases the risk of premature death.

Rules tell a child what is needed to stay physically safe, relationally safe, and true to the values we want them to carry forward into the world.
Relationships build a child who can meet those expectations and recover when they don’t.
Rules set the boundary. Relationships are needed to help the boundary feel manageable, and hold on to the child with strength and warmth when the boundary feels like too much.
A child with a strong, warm, loving relationship with an adult is more protected from the hardest things the world can throw at them than any rule, policy, or programme we could build around them.
Rules are the map. Relationships are the way we get them there safely and with their hearts, minds, and spirits intact.
