[50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1976 YOUTH UPRISINGS COMMEMORATION]

Bridgette Harvey, from the NEETS group in the Soweto community visited the Higher Health Mobile Clinic during the 50th Anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprisings Commemoration, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa at FNB Stadium in Soweto.

While accessing services, Bridgette expressed her appreciation for the services provided by the Higher Health Mobile Clinic and encouraged young people to take charge of their health by knowing their status.

“I would like to thank the Higher Health Mobile Clinic for the services provided. I encourage every young person who is sexually active to get tested because that one test could change your life.”

The Higher Health Mobile Clinic provided a range of services throughout the event, including GBV screening, HIV and TB screening and testing, STI screening and testing, as well as routine health assessments such as BMI, blood pressure and diabetes screening.

[50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1976
YOUTH UPRISINGS COMMEMORATION]

Senzo Sibiya, from the NEETS group in the Soweto community, is visiting the Higher Health Mobile Clinic, which is on-site providing a range of essential health and wellness services to attendees as the 50th Anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprisings Commemoration takes place at FNB Stadium in Soweto.

Services include GBV screening, HIV and TB screening and testing, STI screening and testing, as well as routine health assessments such as BMI, blood pressure and diabetes screening.

While accessing services, Senzo is encouraging all young people to prioritise their health and wellbeing by making use of available support services and knowing their status.

[YOUTH MONTH CAMPAIGN]

As we reflect on the legacy of the youth of 1976, Itumeleng Mongalo, a Peer Educator from Capricorn TVET College, reminds us that the struggle for a better future did not end with previous generations, it continues through the actions of young people today.

“In 1976, students stood up because they knew that education was freedom. Many paid with their lives so that future generations could have opportunities they never had.”

While South Africa has made significant progress, many young people still face challenges that limit their potential, including barriers to education, unemployment, bullying and social inequality. According to Itumeleng, today’s youth have a responsibility to use their voices, ideas and talents to create positive change in their communities.

This Youth Month, let us honour the courage and sacrifice of the class of 1976 by becoming active participants in building a more inclusive, equitable and prosperous society.

“The youth of 1976 gave us the right to dream bigger. Now it is up to us to turn those dreams into action, support one another and continue pushing for change.”

[YOUTH MONTH CAMPAIGN]

Vanessa Nathuli, a Peer Educator from Durban University of Technology, reflects on the legacy of the youth of 1976 and the responsibility of today’s generation to continue building a better South Africa.

“The youth of 1976 fought for the education that shaped our minds. The youth of 1994 cast the first votes that moved our nation into a democracy. The youth of 2015 fought through to create better opportunities for those who came after them. Every generation has its own mission, and the youth of 2026 are no different.”

Vanessa reminds us that while young people continue to face challenges, they also have unprecedented access to information, technology and opportunities to create meaningful change in their communities and beyond.

This Youth Month, let us honour the sacrifices of those who came before us by embracing leadership, innovation and active citizenship. Let us be remembered not only for identifying challenges, but for creating solutions that leave a lasting impact for future generations.

“Use what you know, share what you learn, and when you rise, remember to teach the next person. The youth of yesterday fought for our opportunities. The youth of today must decide what opportunities we will leave behind for tomorrow.”

[YOUTH DAY MESSAGE]

As South Africa commemorates Youth Day today, Higher Health CEO, Prof. Ramneek Ahluwalia, pays tribute to Higher Health’s unsung heroes, our 10,000 Peer Educators serving across 26 public universities, 50 TVET colleges and 9 CET colleges, who dedicate their time to supporting fellow students, promoting health and wellbeing, and creating positive change on campuses and in communities.

“These are patriotic young South Africans who wake up every day to help others. Some are living with HIV, some are survivors of Gender-Based Violence, and many face challenges of their own, yet they continue to serve and uplift their peers.”

Prof Ahluwalia dedicate this Youth Day to Higher Health’s Peer Educators, recognising their invaluable contribution to building healthier, safer and more resilient communities across the Post-School Education and Training sector.

“As we celebrate Youth Day, we are reminded that every young person in South Africa has the potential to be a leader, a changemaker and a Peer Educator. Together, we can build the nation we want to see.”

Nkosingiphile Jericho Zibula, a Peer Educator from Ingwe TVET College, shares a simple breathing technique that students can use to manage stress and regain focus during exams.

“I know exams can be very stressful, especially when it feels like the answers are not coming. Take a moment to breathe in, hold it, and breathe out. Repeat it four times to help release stress and get back into the game.”

Sometimes, taking a few moments to pause and focus on your breathing can help calm your mind, reduce anxiety and improve concentration.
