MU SOMHS DEBATE JOURNEY ENDS IN GLORY AS THEY FINISH SECOND IN SEC SOUTHERN PROVINCE DEBATE CHALLENGE 2026

It was a day filled with passion, confidence, intellectual excellence, and determination as the Mulungushi University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (MU SOMHS) proudly represented Mulungushi University at the 2026 Southern Province Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Debate Competition hosted by David Livingstone College of Education (DALICE).

The prestigious debate brought together eight higher learning institutions from Southern Province, namely; Mulungushi University, Livingstone College of Nursing and Midwifery, National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA), David Livingstone College of Education (DALICE), Livingstone Institute of Business and Engineering Studies (LIBES), Victoria Falls University of Technology, Rusangu University, and Zambia Institute of Animal Health (ZIAH).

Making their debut appearance in the competition, Mulungushi University entered the debate with confidence and a strong determination to make an impact. The team began their journey in the knockout stage against Livingstone College of Nursing and Midwifery, where they delivered a remarkable performance to emerge victorious and qualify to the semifinals.

In the semifinal round, MU SOMHS faced Livingstone Institute of Business and Engineering Studies (LIBES) and once again showcased their debating excellence by securing a convincing victory, earning a place in the grand final.

The final stage saw Mulungushi University face the defending champions, Rusangu University, in a thrilling battle of knowledge, research, confidence, and public speaking skills. After a highly competitive contest, Rusangu University successfully defended their title with 859 points, while Mulungushi University finished with 815 points, securing the position of second-best institution in Southern Province.

Adding to the celebration, Mulungushi University’s own Natalie Chilikwela was awarded 2nd Overall Best Speaker, highlighting the exceptional individual talent and preparation within the team.

Although the final outcome brought emotional moments, the achievement remains a historic milestone for MU SOMHS, especially considering it was their first time participating in the SEC Debate Competition. The team demonstrated that with commitment, teamwork, and determination, great milestones can be achieved.

As SOMHS TV, we congratulate the debate team for representing Mulungushi University with excellence and pride. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the Securities and Exchange Commission Zambia for creating a platform that nurtures critical thinking, confidence, and intellectual growth among students.

The trophy may have gone elsewhere, but MU SOMHS walked away with something greater — experience, recognition, and a foundation for future victories.
