Teaching and learning about Jewish history and culture in the heart of Europe, at CEU Vienna.

The CEU Jewish Studies Program offers an MA specialization that covers the wide expanse of Jewish culture, society and history, with a special emphasis on the ramified Jewish experience in Central and Eastern Europe from early modern times to the present. Together with our partners in Vienna and Budapest, we organize public lectures, conferences, field trips and walking tours, and bring together researchers and scholars of Central European Jewry to present the newest research in the field.

Yesterday evening, at the Jüdisches Museum Wien, Lisa Silverman presented her groundbreaking new book, "The Postwar Antisemite: Culture and Complicity after the Holocaust," in conversation with Éva Kovács (Wiener Wiesenthal Institut für Holocaust Studien - VWI) and Michael L. Miller (CEU). Examining postwar trials, films and texts, Lisa brilliantly showed how Austrians, Germans, and others used the figure of the Antisemite as a way to come to terms with their altered circumstances and to shape new national self-understandings.

Our anniversary conference concluded with discussions on the politics of memory in East-Central Europe, Communism’s ‘Jewish Question’, a wonderful, thought-provoking keynote by Marcin Wodziński on the state and future of the field, and an inspiring discussion about the future of Jewish Studies.

We were so happy that we could welcome so many amazing scholars, alumni and friends, and to celebrate our 25 Years as CEU Jewish Studies together!

We are very grateful to the European Association for Jewish Studies, the City of Vienna, and the Knapp Family and the Salo W. and Jeannette M. Baron Foundations for their generous support for this conference.

We are looking forward to the next 25 years!

We were very excited to welcome Prof. Marcin Wodziński (Judaistyka – Uniwersytet Wrocławski) to CEU Jewish Studies, where he taught a short course on Hasidism. Our students truly enjoyed learning from one of the leading scholars in the field and we got a fascinating tour of Hasidic Vienna by Eidel Malowicki.
