Button Battery Safety - do you know what do to? 🔋

Key points
⚫Button batteries are powerful coin-shaped batteries used in many household items.
✨Children like button batteries because they are small and shiny, like toys.
🔥A button battery can burn a child’s food pipe (oesophagus) in just two hours, causing internal injuries, life-threatening bleeding or death.
☠Button batteries are as dangerous as poisons and must be kept away from children.
🤧Swallowing button batteries can cause symptoms similar to common childhood illnesses, such as noisy breathing, chest pain, drooling, and problems swallowing.
💩Some children may vomit blood or pass dark poo.

❗If you are worried your child has swallowed a button battery, call an ambulance (000) immediately or go straight to your nearest hospital emergency department. Do not wait for symptoms before getting medical help.❗

🍯Give your child two teaspoons of honey every 10 minutes until you reach the hospital. This will form a barrier around the battery to reduce chemical burns. If you do not have honey, or your child is under 12 months, you can give them two teaspoons of jam every 10 minutes.

❗❗Do not give honey to children under 12 months. ❗❗

With some colder days predicted over the next week, a good one to remember!

Even though it may be convenient, especially when not wanting to get little ones out in the cold weather that is starting up - Be sure to never leave your little ones in the car with the car turned off.

Making sure you take you child with you is extremely important.

Even though it may be cold out side, you car can still warm up quickly. And in very cold areas of Australia Conversely, children are at risk of hypothermia if left unattended in a car in a cold climate.

Throw back to this one, still gets me. Glad it was me who drove the car that day, not sure what others would think 🤣

Occupational hazard of what I do is occasionally catching sight of my back-seat and forgetting I had Rona tucked away....
This is what I saw when I went to back out of a carpark last night after a meeting.... took 5 yrs off my life thinking someone was hiding in my car 🤣

Has your child ever got something stuck up their nose? I am sure we all know the phase of kids sticking strange things in their noses.

One it is stuck it can be scary for you and the child, especially if it does not come straight out.

This is when the ‘Mother’s Kiss’ or ‘Parent’s Kiss’ comes in.
1. places mouth over the child’s open mouth, forming a firm seal as if performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
2. cover the unaffected nostril with a finger
3. blows until they feel resistance caused by the closure
4. gives a sharp exhalation to deliver a short puff of air into the child’s mouth which passes through and should pop the item out

If necessary, the procedure can be repeated a number of times.
