An early start in the studio today, diving into the stunning string arrangements crafted by Denise Rothall and Pamela Buccini for Brother Sun, Sister Moon, the theme song of the 1972 film that follows the early life of St Francis of Assisi.
Adding phrasing, bowings, articulation, and fi*****ng to this timeless Donovan classic is a true privilege, every detail brings the music closer to life.

This week marks our first Festival Strings rehearsal, and alongside the wonderful Melanie Harrald, I’ll be working with exceptional senior string students from all over South Australia as we prepare for the Catholic Schools Music Festival in September at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

Synesthesia has always colored my musical world.

Synesthesia is a neurological trait in which the stimulation of one sense automatically and involuntarily triggers an experience in another sense.
Chromesthesia (Sound-to-Color): Sounds, musical notes, or voices trigger the perception of colors, shapes, or movement.

As a violinist, conductor, composer, and educator, sound arrives not only as vibration, but as light, texture, and movement. Notes blooming into color, harmonies drifting like shifting shadow and brightness. Music doesn’t just speak; it glows.

This cross sensory lens shapes the way I breathe through a phrase, the way I sculpt a line, the way I guide others toward expression. I think in gradients, in textures, in hues, because that is how music reveals itself to me: luminous, fluid, alive. In rehearsal, a single chord might unfurl as a wash of gold, or a whispered pianissimo might feel like a softening of the air itself.

What I once believed was simply “how everyone hears” I now hold as a rare and beautiful gift, one that deepens intuition, fuels imagination, and continues to illuminate every corner of my musical life.
