✍️ Want Band 9 Coherence & Cohesion in IELTS Writing Task 2?

Many IELTS candidates focus on vocabulary and grammar.

But even strong ideas can lose marks if they aren't connected logically.

Here's the secret:

Band 9 essays are easy to follow.

They guide the reader from one idea to the next without confusion.

✅ Clear topic sentence

✅ Logical progression of ideas

✅ Effective transitions and cohesive devices

✅ Smooth connections between sentences

Take this example:

"Working from home offers several advantages. Firstly, it saves commuting time, which allows employees to have a better work-life balance. In addition, it can increase productivity, as people often work in a more comfortable environment. However, there are some drawbacks, such as reduced social interaction, which may affect teamwork."

Why does this score highly for Coherence & Cohesion?

🎯 Ideas are presented in a logical order.

🎯 Transitions like "Firstly," "In addition," and "However" help the reader follow the argument.

🎯 Each sentence builds naturally on the previous one.

🎯 The paragraph flows smoothly from start to finish.

Remember:

Band 9 Coherence & Cohesion is not about using more linking words.

It's about using the right transitions at the right time and making your ideas easy to understand.

💬 Challenge:

Write one paragraph answering:

"Do the advantages of working from home outweigh the disadvantages?"

Try using:
✔ Topic sentence
✔ Supporting reason
✔ Example
✔ Transition word

Fill in the Blanks: 2 Left = Easy Choice

Still stuck on Fill in the Blanks?
Use this simple trick:

Don’t find the right answer first.
Eliminate the wrong ones.

Here’s how:

• Check grammar → if it breaks the sentence ❌
• Check collocation → if it sounds wrong ❌

Just like that, 2 options disappear.

Now you’re choosing between 2 instead of 4.

Faster. Easier. Smarter.

Rule: Eliminate first → choose faster

Save this before your next PTE practice.

Your opening paragraph can set the tone for your entire score.
In OET Writing, a strong start follows one simple rule:
Purpose + Main medical issue + Patient identifiers.

Keep it short, accurate, and complete.
No storytelling. No extra background. Just clear intent from the first line — exactly what examiners want to see. ✅
