BreastScreen services across several states are now informing women of their breast density on their mammogram results, with advice to follow up with their GP about how that might influence their individual screening recommendations.

Here’s what YOU need to KNOW in under 60 seconds 👇

🧠 What Breast Density actually means:

Dense tissue (BI-RADS c & d) appears white on mammograms, the same colour as cancer. This can masks tumours and reduces sensitivity of screening. Sensitivity drops from 90% (BI-RADS a/b) → 84% (c) → 64% (d).

🎗️ Dense breasts also confer slightly increased cancer risk

Compared to BI-RADS b (baseline):

a = ~half the risk

c = ~1.6× risk

d = ~2.6× risk

Always consider density in the context of overall risk factors, such as age, family history, genetics, prior lesions, MHT, BMI, alcohol, and parity.

🩻 Mammograms STILL remain first-line

2D mammography remains the primary screening test for all densities, with recommendation for screening mammogram every 2 years from ages 50 to 74 for patients at baseline population risk.

🔍 When to think about supplemental imaging:

For women with BI-RADS c or d:

- If moderate familial risk:
→ Use a risk tool (iPrevent or Tyrer-Cuzick).
→ If lifetime risk >30% or 10-yr risk >5% → MBS-funded MRI (
