Today is the International Day of Play, a time to advocate for the importance of play across childhood (including for teenagers).
Is Australia sucking the joy out of childhood?
The first time Renae Powell waved her eldest child through the primary school gates she felt something was missing: play time.

The International Day of Play is on 11th June. Our days at kindy are already full to the brim with playing, so we'd like to challenge our local feeder schools to offer children an extra 31 minutes of play. Every child deserves to play 🥳.
Who is participating? Tag your school or children’s service!
Let’s join schools and children’s services across the UK, and take the 31 minute challenge here in Aus!

We’ve recently engaged in Bush Kindy sessions in Para Wirra Conservation Park, offering children the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature for the day. This image captures the collaboration, communication and sensory input (proprioception) accessible to children when playing outside with loose parts. What fun we had!

With so much talk about 3 year old preschool in the media, we've noticed that it's getting more and more confusing for families to know when their child can start kindy.
In government preschools, there is a staged rollout for universal 3 year old preschool between 2026 and 2032. 2029 is our scheduled year for implementation at Angle Vale Preschool, and 4 year olds will remain the priority for enrolment. Currently, enrolment for children who are 3 is limited to Aboriginal children and children in care.
So, when can my child start preschool?
If your child turns 4:
- before 1 May, they’re eligible to start preschool in term 1 that year
- between 1 May and 31 October, they’re eligible to start preschool in term 3 that year
- after 31 October, they’re eligible to start preschool in term 1 the following year
