Sometimes sitting still at a desk doesn't work. This learner needed to move because ACTIVE BODY = ACTIVE BRAIN! 🧠💡

Physically jumping from sound circle to sound circle turned tricky blending into a high-energy activity, which, for this little person, built stronger reading skills than words on a flashcard could.

Ever wondered what we do in our Prep Reading and Writing sessions? 🤔✨

Each session is packed with targeted, hands-on activities designed to build our students' foundational literacy skills.

Here is what a typical session might look like:

Phonological Awareness: We tune our ears into sounds by rhyming words, blending sounds to make words, and chopping up (or segmenting) words into their individual sounds.

Phonics: We practise all of the sounds we have learnt so far at school and learn some new ones, too!

Reading Games: We play fun games to practise our word reading... you can probably hear their excitement out on the street when we are playing these games!! 🎲🗣️

Concepts of Print, Sentence Building & Writing: We order words to make a sentence, and then practise our letter formation when writing words. We also look closely at how print works by finding things like the first letter of a sentence, a full stop, a word, or a space.

To finish last week's session, my students put the words "This is a spider" in the correct order. Then, using their phonics and segmenting skills, they had a go at writing the word "web" independently! 🕷️🕸️

Gosh I enjoyed this morning’s writing session.

Taking the time to learn about my students and what they are interested in pays off tenfold.

Yes, I have to teach them letter formations, spelling rules and structures, and I can’t be too flexible with those things. But what I can be flexible with is the topic!

This morning we wrote an information report about jet planes. Watching my student’s eagerness to get his ideas down on paper reminded me exactly why student-centered learning matters 🩵

Ever heard of non-standard partitioning?

It’s one thing to know that 161 is 100 + 60 + 1 (standard partitioning). But there’s a deeper understanding in knowing that 161 can also be 100 + 50 + 11 or 100 + 40 + 21.

Non-standard partitioning of 3 digit numbers is a concept taught in year 2. It really stretches their little brains 🧠

This learner worked so hard on this concept. At first, it was tricky. But by playing a fun game that kept her engaged and enabled her to practise the same skill over and over, her understanding and confidence grew. What an absolute superstar! ⭐️
