"If you are the driver, you need to understand you are holding everybody's life in a steering wheel...
I heard the sirens and I said to my eldest daughter "ring your brother”. Lindsay rang the phone and he didn't pick up.
Elijah loves any sports, all sports, but rugby league is Elijah's favourite.
Elijah wanted to go out with the boys - his mates. I can remember that night. It's just like yesterday. 2:30, 3 o'clock in the morning. I'm still up at this stage. I heard a knock at the front door. I knew it then, something's not right. When I opened the door, it was two police officers outside. Before they finished what they said I said, this is about Elijah isn't it?
I knew there was speeding involved, no doubt. Elijah was a passenger.
Hopefully this will deliver the message to change the way that young people think. You can make a decision to speak up. Let the driver know to slow down, or if they don't slow down, ask them to stop the car so you can get out.”

Ever travelled in rural Australia?
Ever travelled in rural Australia?
Then Rural Road Safety Month is for you! And it's fast approaching.
We are urging everyone to get involved this August to spread the message of road safety on rural roads!
More than two-thirds of Australian road fatalities occur on regional and remote roads. These roads often feature long, monotonous stretches, undivided lanes, and higher speed limits.
Fatigue and the casual “she’ll be right” driving mindset are massive contributors to head-on and single-vehicle crashes. Pull over and rest every two hours.
Rural road safety month applies to us all. From work to road trips – we all have a part to play in making the roads safer for all.
Rural Road Safety Month is created to educate and spread awareness through everything we do.
We’ve got ready-to-use free resources, media calls and events, fun activities for you to host at school, work, home or in community groups and ARSF research for you to use anywhere and everywhere!

Teen independence starts before they get their licence.
Every day, young people make real decisions on and around the road, walking, riding, travelling as passengers… and sometimes taking risks.
That’s why ARSF created RoadSet, presented by : a free, interactive online road safety learning experience designed for Year 9 (and usable across Years 7–12) that builds safer decision‑making through real‑life scenarios, short videos and choice-based activities.
In just one lesson, students can:
- Recognise risks in real road situations
- Understand how everyday decisions impact safety
- Practise how to respond and choose safer options
- Teachers: Curriculum‑aligned support is available (V9 Years 9–10).
Parents/carers: Share this with your school, these skills matter in the secondary years when independence ramps up.
Get started with RoadSet!
