Why Coerver this summer ?

Following the Netherlands v Japan World Cup game - a reflection from Alf Galustian our Co founder !

"I was so proud to see Japan fight their way back to a deserved draw against a strong and organised Netherlands. For me, it felt like the completion of a long circle in football development.

In 1984, when Charlie Cooke and I started Coerver Coaching, we were hugely influenced by Dutch Football, in particular the visionary work of Rinus Michels, Johan Cruyff, and Wiel Coerver.

Dutch football became the catalyst for modern football: "Total football" was born and continues its influence today. So you can say Holland represents the birth of Coerver Coaching.

We have grown a lot in 40 years, building a Curriculum and Method for young player development that Arsene Wenger has called “A Curriculum for the Ball".

A significant part of this development took place in Japan.

I first went to Japan in 1993 and have been going there every year since then. The first professional League had just started. Coerver® Japan had just 30 young players and 3 coaches. Within five years we had established a National Academy for Coaches.

Fast forward 30 plus years and the Academy has developed more than 400 Coerver Coaches, and there are more than 20,000 boys and girls weekly that attend the 151 Coerver Schools in Japan— much to the credit to Matsuo San and Shinji Ishibashi and his great team.

The President of the Japanese Football Association, Tashima San, has credited Coerver Coaching as a major influence toward the success of Japanese football.

There were three Coerver academy players in yesterday’s Japanese team. And I’m pretty certain that every player had some sort of development experience influenced by the Coerver Coaching curriculum. The national team coach, Hajime Moriyasu, is one of the students in the Coerver Coach’s Academy

Japan has had a huge influence on me. It is a country and a football culture that I love and that has taught me many things. The Japanese commitment to learning, to detail, to patient technical development, and, perhaps most of all, to their trade-mark fighting spirit.

All of these qualities showed up on the field yesterday.

All are an essential part of the future game.

Join us this summer at our camps across the World and in here Scotland in the summer of football.
