This is such a good question for kids who rush, guess, or say “I don’t know” before thinking.

“If dinner needs to be ready by 6, when do we start?”

It teaches them how to work backwards — a skill they’ll use in maths, assignments, exams, sport, and everyday routines.

You can guide them with:
“How long does cooking take?”
“What needs to happen first?”
“What time should we start preparing?”
“What if it takes 10 minutes longer?”

This builds estimation, subtraction, sequencing, and problem-solving.

The best part? It does not feel like a lesson.

A lot of parents worry they need to sit down and reteach school maths at home. But sometimes the most helpful thing is simply asking better everyday questions.

In research on the home mathematics environment, scholars describe maths-related activities at home as part of the broader learning environment that can support children’s mathematics development.

Save this for one of those nights when there’s no time for extra homework, but you still want to keep their brain ticking.

“We’re leaving in 20 minutes” makes sense to adults.

To kids, it can feel like… sometime soon, but not really urgent yet.

That’s why this question is so useful:

“If we leave in 20 minutes, what time is that?”

It helps your child connect time, addition, subtraction, and planning in a way that actually feels real.

You can make it even better by adding:
“What do you still need to do before then?”
“How long will each thing take?”
“Do we have enough time?”

Now they’re not just calculating. They’re reasoning.

And that’s a big part of maths confidence — learning how to break a situation into smaller steps.

A 2022 study published in Child Development found that maths homework help can feel more negative than everyday maths activities, especially when parents feel less confident helping. The same study linked more negative parent-child maths interactions with poorer later maths motivation and achievement.

So no pressure. Just one question while life is already happening.

Would your child answer this quickly, or would it make them stop and think?

If your child has ever asked, “When am I ever going to use this?” — recipes are one of the easiest answers.

Doubling a recipe brings in multiplication, fractions, measurement, and estimating without making it feel like maths homework.

Ask:
“If we double this recipe, how much flour do we need?”
“What happens to ½ cup if we make twice as much?”
“Do we need to double everything, or just some things?”

These questions help your child see that maths is not just about getting an answer on paper. It’s about thinking through a real situation.

And for parents who feel like they don’t know how to help with maths anymore, this is a good place to start.

You don’t need to explain a whole topic. You just need to ask the question and let them think it through.

So, no pressure to run a mini maths lesson. Just start with a real moment.

Save this one for the next time your child helps in the kitchen.

“How many minutes until we leave?” sounds like a normal morning question.

But for your child, it’s also a quiet maths workout.

They’re practising how to:
work with time,
count forwards or backwards,
subtract minutes,
plan what they can realistically do before leaving.

And honestly, this is where a lot of kids struggle — not because they “can’t do maths”, but because maths can feel disconnected from real life.

So instead of turning the morning rush into another lecture, try turning it into a quick thinking moment.

You might ask:
“We leave at 8:10. It’s 7:45 now. How long have we got?”

Then give them a few seconds to think before jumping in.

That little pause matters. It helps them build confidence, not just speed.

Helpful maths practice does not always need a desk, a worksheet, or a quiet room. Sometimes it happens while everyone is looking for shoes.
