At the Irlen Dyslexia Centre we share information to help families, teachers and individuals better understand Irlen Syndrome and the signs to look out for.

They can only “try harder” for so long before you start wondering if something else is going on.
If your child has been trying their best but is still struggling with reading, focus, fatigue, headaches, light sensitivity or learning confidence, there may be more to the story.
Sometimes difficulties that look like ADHD, dyslexia, low motivation or poor concentration may actually be linked to visual processing problems such as Irlen Syndrome.
We help families explore whether visual stress may be making learning harder than it needs to be.
Your child is not lazy.
They are not simply “not trying hard enough.”
They just need the right support.
If this sounds familiar, you’re in the right place.

Reading fatigue is rarely laziness or poor focus. It can look like headaches, frustration, avoiding homework, or needing frequent breaks. If reading feels unusually hard, there may be a reason.

What a wonderful reminder that Irlen Syndrome can run in families. 💜
This photo beautifully shows how different family members can experience Irlen symptoms in their own individual ways — from light sensitivity and headaches to reading difficulties, fatigue, concentration challenges or visual discomfort.
For some families, one person’s Irlen journey helps others finally understand symptoms they may have lived with for years.
If light sensitivity, reading struggles or visual processing difficulties sound familiar in your family, it may be worth exploring further.

Yes, Irlen Syndrome is hereditary!
Meet 12 family members from Western Australia, all wearing Irlen Spectral Filters! Here’s what they had to say, “I wanted to share my family photo wearing our Irlen lenses. It’s been 13 months since we started on the Irlen journey and look at us now!!! So in this photo are my parents, brothers, sister, my husband, 3 kids and niece and nephew. Our Irlen lenses have helped us all in our own individual ways and for that we are all grateful.”

Dyslexia or Visual processing problems?
Some children who are struggling with reading may be labelled as having dyslexia, or parents may wonder if dyslexia is the reason reading feels so hard.
But sometimes, the difficulty may also be linked to visual processing problems such as Irlen Syndrome.
Signs can include:
📖 Reading that starts smoothly but becomes harder the longer your child reads
👀 Eye fatigue, watery eyes or rubbing eyes while reading
☝️ Needing to use a finger to track words
👓 Continuing to struggle even after getting glasses
😫 Headaches, tiredness, poor concentration or avoidance of reading tasks.

Visual comfort and processing can change over time — especially as children grow, learning demands increase, lighting environments change, or daily stress and fatigue levels shift.
That’s why regular Irlen rechecks are so important.
A child who was comfortable with their Irlen filters last year may begin to notice reading strain, headaches, tired eyes, concentration difficulties, light sensitivity, or reduced confidence in learning again if their needs have changed.
We’re here to support you with ongoing care, guidance and rechecks to make sure your child continues receiving the best possible support.
If it has been 12–18 months since your last appointment, now is a great time to book a recheck.

Homework struggles can affect the whole family.
The tears. The frustration. The “I can’t do this.” The long nights at the kitchen table, when a task that should take 10 minutes turns into an emotional struggle.
Sometimes it’s not about behaviour, motivation, or effort. For some children, reading, writing, glare, bright pages, or visual stress can make schoolwork feel overwhelming and exhausting.
If your child is struggling more than expected, it may be worth asking why.
Support is available.
