Health Day 2026!

Today our students had a fantastic time celebrating Health Day by exploring a range of interactive activities focused on health, wellbeing and community.

From completing our Health Passport challenge and enjoying a free sausage sizzle to meeting with local organisations and learning about the support available in our community, there was something for everyone. Congratulations to all of our prize winners!

A huge thank you to our amazing external stallholders for giving up their time to provide engaging activities, valuable information and meaningful conversations for our students. Your support helped make the day such a success, and we are incredibly grateful for your contribution.

Thank you also to our Student Councillors, House Leaders and staff who helped organise and run the event. We appreciate everyone who made Health Day such a memorable experience!

Geography can be a tasty subject!

Our Year 11 ATAR Geography students recently explored globalisation in a hands-on and tasty way by sampling food and drinks from around the world. The menu featured flavours from Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Mexico, the USA, Thailand, Croatia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sri Lanka.

As part of our study of globalisation, students investigated how ideas, cultures, products and traditions spread across the world, shaping the way we live, eat and connect with one another. What better way to understand the diffusion of products and culture than through food?

A fantastic learning experience that brought geography to life - one delicious bite at a time!

We would love to thank Jane Lean, the Executive Assistant at Gosnells Community Lotteries House.

Jane has, through her many community connections, arranged for bags of clothes and toiletries for students in need.

On behalf of our school community, thank you for your ongoing generosity, kindness and dedication to supporting young people when they need it most.

27 Year 9 students recently attended the annual Byford Careers Expo, a two-day event held across Friday and Saturday.

Our students represented Southern River College with pride, enthusiasm, and maturity throughout the event. They had the opportunity to explore a wide range of career pathways, engage with industry professionals, and gain valuable insights into future education, training, and employment opportunities.

The expo provided an excellent opportunity for students to broaden their horizons, discover new possibilities, and begin thinking about their future goals and aspirations.

A special thank you to our Career Practitioner, Misha Mamo, for organising this valuable experience for our students.

Last week, our students had the privilege of hosting Dr Robert Francis Isaacs OAM JP PhD (Hon) for a powerful guest speaker session, where he shared his remarkable life journey, achievements, and enduring legacy.

Beginning his career in 1973 with Community and Child Health Services, Dr Isaacs has gone on to establish dental, rehabilitation, and health care clinics that have made a lasting impact on communities across Western Australia.
As a former Councillor and Deputy Mayor for the City of Gosnells, Dr Isaacs also made history as the first Aboriginal person elected to local government in Australia.

Today, he continues to serve the community as Chair of the Australia Day Council WA, Executive Member of the State Aboriginal Advisory Council, and Foundation Member, President and Chair of the Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service.

Students were also introduced to his book, Two Cultures, One Story, and had the opportunity to hear firsthand about the importance of self-determination, resilience, and perseverance. His reflections encouraged students to embrace their own cultural journeys, pursue their goals with confidence, and recognise the strength that comes from knowing who you are.

We thank Dr Isaacs for sharing his wisdom, experiences, and inspiring message with our students. His story is a powerful reminder that determination, leadership, and cultural pride can create meaningful change for future generations.

On Friday the 5th of June, our Junior Volleyball boys and girls (Year 7-9) put their hard work on show at the School Sport WA Volleyball Competition. Held at Warwick Stadium, eight Southern River teams competed for first place against 30 others in the South East Region (1 of 8 regions).

Junior Girls: A fantastic effort from Divisions A & B. Both teams secured 1st place, with our Division A girls advancing to the Champion of Champions Cup (the winner of each region) so essentially the Top 8 schools in WA. This will be a first for our junior girls at SRC. Winning B division also exhibited our excellent depth within the junior girls program.

An unbelievable achievement to defeat several volleyball specialist schools that are considerably larger than our school population.

Junior Boys: An unlucky performance on the back of their success last year, but still a strong day for the Division A team, who placed 2nd as the runners-up, just narrowly missing the winning set.

Well done to all the hard work of our coaching team - Ezekiel Carpio (Apex) who has spent numerous hours working with our Volleyballers, Mr.James with all the work he has done establishing the culture and foundation of the program, and Ms.Simmons who has done an outstanding job this term organising the busiest Volleyball term on the calendar as she covers Mr.James.
