Hi there TTA Electrical Inspectors.
When visually inspecting the labelling for a safety service, AS/NZS 3000:2018 clause 7.2.4.4 (b) says the Main Switch must be labelled with the correct lettering.
Which lettering is correct and which lettering is not compliant according to AS/NZS 3000:2018?

Hi there TTA Electrical Inspectors. Did you know that you can earth a switchboard enclosure with a neutral conductor?
AS/NZS 3000:2018 Clause 5.5.3.5(a) gives us this option as shown on page 298.
Of course, we generally earth metal enclosures with an earthing conductor. But for those studying their electrical Inspectors assessments, you need to be aware that a metallic construction switchboard may have a full-size neutral conductor that is providing the earthing for the switchboard enclosure.
While this is unusual as an everyday practice, this is not a defect for this switchboard.
As in other Australian states, where an earth is not available, a metallic structure can be earthed through a supply neutral conductor.

Hi there TTA Electrical Inspectors.
Do you know the difference between different brands of socket outlets.
Not all socket outlets are the same.
Some have friction fit terminals for the 3 pin plug top.
Some have spring fit terminals that give a very good connection to the 3 pin plug top.
Remember, brass terminals are hard wearing, whereas copper connection are not hard wearing.
Cooper connections do not like heavy current loads with high temperatures. Whereas, brass terminals will be both hard wearing and good with high current temperatures.

Hi there TTA electrical inspectors.
Did you know that DIN rail socket outlets are a switched socket outlet. Yes, the active and neutral conductors are switched as you insert a 3 pin plug into the socket outlet.
Also, as you insert the 3 pin socket outlet you switch a neon indicator into the circuit. However, when testing the socket outlet without power, there is a 20 Meg Ohm resistor connected in series with the neon indicator lamp.
So, when testing for your safe approach assessment, you will find a 20 Meg Ohm test result between active and neutral terminals. This is not a fault.

Can you spot the visual defect TTA Electrical Inspectors?
The left hand DIN rail socket outlet is compliant. The right hand DIN rail socket outlet is not compliant as the neutral conductor is 1.5 mm with a 2.5 mm active conductor.

Hi there TTA Electrical Inspectors.
Did you know that Neutral conductors must have the same current carrying capacity as the associated active conductor.
Wiring Rule 3.5.2 (a) (i)
So, if you have a socket outlet, in a construction switchboard, wired in building wire, the active and neutral conductors must be the same size.
Watch out for this technical/visual defect in the safe approach assessment.
Sometimes this is hard to see in a dark switchboard enclosure with black neutral conductors.
So, TTA inspectors have a good look.

Hi there TTA Inspectors.
When visually inspecting an earth electrode disconnect tag, have a look at the wording on the tag. It might not say,
WARNING:
MAIN EARTHING CONDUCTOR-DO NOT DISCONNECT
Wiring Rule 5.5.1.3
Attention to detail is a must in the safe approach assessment.
Have a good look!
The tag, might say, ‘warning electric shock hazard’

Meet Inspector Justin Perrin from Upper Ferntree
Gully - TTA’s newest Electrical G Class Inspector who passed his G Practical ⚡️ 🌟 🏆 early May 2026. Congratulations Justin.
Justin is another very smart TTA trained G Class Inspector to qualify this year 🤩 👏🏼👏🏼
And he has just completed his Renewable (RE) Class training this past week. 👏🏼👏🏼 Soon he’ll be inspecting Solar ☀️, Generators and Batteries 🪫👌🏼.
A very successful month for Justin who worked very hard for both classes of his inspection licence.
Come and see Matt, Mal and Andrew at TTA to help you achieve your dreams. Well done to our team of Trainers, 1st class.

Hi there TTA Inspectors. Remember that switchboard wiring can be any colour except green/ yellow.
Amendment 3 of AS/NZS 3000:2018 allows wiring within a switchboard enclosure to be any colour.
However, this becomes confusing when red neutral conductors, as switchboard wiring, are connected with black neutral conductors, used as installation wiring.
Also, switching the supply neutral is prohibited as this PEN conductor provides the earthing for a TNCS earthing system for Australia.
So for those LEI’s studying for their safe approach assessment, watch out for these issues.
Andrew.
