The frustration sets in, leading you to question your commitment to the organisation. It's a classic case of goal conflict.
Goal conflicts can create significant friction within a business, straining relationships between leaders and employees. However, goals remain integral to a thriving workplace. Leaders must craft purposeful experiences that align everyone on a collective journey.
The solution lies in simplicity. Set one or two clear goals, preserving their significance. Too many goals can dilute their importance. Engage your team by asking for their input on achieving these goals. Encourage a shared understanding of individual roles in achieving the company's objectives โ a concept often referred to as maintaining a clear "line of sight."
To ensure everyone is on the same page, pose the question: "What do you think you need to do to contribute to the company's goal?" This approach eradicates the "it's not my job" mindset and fosters a collective understanding of how each role propels the business toward success.

During an era when venomous cobras posed a threat to public safety, the British administration initiated an ingenious solution: a bounty on dead snakes. Initially, this measure appeared effective as the cobra population dwindled. However, the locals, ever resourceful, found a loophole. Rather than risking their lives capturing wild snakes, they began breeding them to claim the bounty. This method proved easier, safer, and allowed them to produce snakes in much larger numbers.
The unforeseen twist occurred when the British, realising the manipulation, decided to terminate the bounty program. To curb the breeders, they cracked down on the snake breeding operations. Alas, this move backfired. The captive snakes, no longer valuable, were released into the wild, resulting in a catastrophic surge in the cobra population.
Human nature, it seems, instinctively responds to measures and rewards. This historical tale underscores a critical lesson for today's businesses: the importance of aligning metrics with desired behaviours. Merely setting performance metrics isn't enough; they must incentivise the right outcomes and behaviours.

Unintended consequences can arise from poorly thought-out metrics, leading to undesirable outcomes.
Ensure that the measures used to evaluate performance are not just quantitative but are aligned with the ethical and strategic compass of the organization. Did you know the average person has nearly 150 tasks on their to-do lists?
A sure recipe for failure.
And overloading our lists creates a continual hum of worry in our head, just like that song that becomes stuck in your head.
It is only when you play the song entirely or sing it to the end do you achieve closure. The same occurs with our lists. When we fail to finish business, it gets carried forward into present work, interfering with our future actions. Anxiety caused by unfinished business is called ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ก๐ฆ๐ช๐จ๐ข๐ณ๐ฏ๐ช๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ง๐ฆ๐ค๐ต - named after the researcher who first investigated this phenomenon, Bluma Zeigarnik.
Zeigarnik found that the human mind does not like it when things aren't conclusive, which can lead to unhelpful self-criticism. These lists help us remember the many things we must tackle. But, at the same time, induce unhealthy, disarming anxiety, and thoughts of โ๐ผ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ก ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ข๐โโ.
So how do you overcome the brain churn? Here is some sage advice from Warren Buffet:
โญ Circle your 5 highest priorities; then focus on those 5 while โavoiding at all costsโ doing anything on the remaining list.
This method allowed Buffet to improve productivity and focus. And my last piece of guidance it to ensure each has an underlying plan to go with it!

In all reality, very few of us are effective goal-setters. We often find ourselves caught up in the whirlwind of modern life, where we feel the constant pressure to keep up with the Joneses โ our friends, family, and peers, all seemingly achieving one milestone after another. But in this quest to keep pace, we may lose sight of our own unique journey and the importance of setting goals that truly align with our values.
Failing to set these goals and then neglecting to acknowledge your achievements could well be putting your mental health and overall well-being at risk. It's easy to get caught in the comparison trap and feel that your progress isn't measuring up to someone else's. But here's the real secret: your path and your progress are entirely your own, and it's crucial to remember that.
So, ask yourself, how often do you take a moment to praise your own progress, regardless of how small it may seem? It's essential to break free from the cycle of comparison and start appreciating the unique steps you've taken on your own journey. Celebrate your achievements, and don't be too hard on yourself for not keeping up with someone else's standards or pace.
Take a moment each day to tell yourself, "Hey, I did a great job today," or "I'm proud of what I have accomplished!" This positive reinforcement will not only boost your self-esteem but also provide the motivation you need to continue moving forward in your own direction. 2๏ธโฃ ๐ข๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฝ๐ต๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ ๐ผ๐ป ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐: Focusing solely on quantifiable metrics (the M) can be like obsessing over the numbers on your compass, sometimes causing you to overlook other important aspects of your journey.

Goal setting is not an over-the-counter treatment for building motivation. After all, if it were, it would be sold at retail. So, don't treat goal-setting like such but like a doctor prescribed medication, carefully dosed and closely supervised.

Achieving goals is easier with help. First, you have to identify your strengths, weaknesses, and the resources available to you. Then you have to plan your course of action. Because if you are not careful, you can set unreachable goals.

I've worked with many unhappy people who were wasting time and energy trying to achieve goals that had no meaning. If you want to reach your highest potential, you need to fulfil the deepest desires of your heart and soul - that's when your work becomes most enjoyable.

Like a casino's allure, this approach keeps motivation high, prevents fixation on rewards, and focuses your energy on the task. It's the balance that keeps your motivation robust.

It's a universal truth that you'll encounter pockets of resistance and challenging moments as you pursue your business goals. However, if you can use a defined period, best practice is 12 weeks. Then, there is enough space for progress while remaining short enough to stay sustainable.
But on those challenging days, you will need more motivation; this is where visualisation exercises draw upon positive and negative emotions to boost your motivation.
For example, let's say your goal is to increase your sales revenue. On a tough day, visualise the benefits of your success, such as increased financial stability, recognition, or personal satisfaction. Visualise what achieving your goal means to you and your business.
Conversely, draw motivation from what you're seeking to avoid. In this scenario, you might envision the consequences of not reaching your sales targets, such as missed opportunities, financial setbacks, or professional stagnation. Whatever tactic you choose, the carrot (positive visualisation) or the stick (negative visualisation), ensure they are in your motivation toolkit. They can help you stay on course and regain focus during challenging times.

While it might seem natural to share your aspirations with others, doing so can often have the opposite effect of what you intend.

You may have noticed that your motivation seems to wane over time when you've enthusiastically shared your business goals or personal ambitions with friends, family, or even on social media. There is science behind this phenomenon. When we announce our goals, we receive positive feedback from others. This positive reinforcement activates specific reward and motivation systems in our brains. However, this motivation quickly dissipates, which can diminish the likelihood of us actually achieving the goal.
In other words, sharing your goal gives you a sense of accomplishment that mimics the feeling of achieving the goal itself. This can lead to complacency and decrease your motivation to work toward it.
