Healthy opposition and conflict are not the same thing.

In healthy opposition, people can disagree respectfully. They stay curious, listen properly, focus on ideas instead of attacking people, and keep shared goals in view.

Conflict feels different.

It starts to feel personal. Listening drops. Defensiveness rises. Emotions escalate. People dig in, keep score, and lose sight of what theyโ€™re trying to solve.

In our recent SDI webinar, Steve Wood explored how SDI helps teams understand what changes when people feel triggered.

Some people accommodate first.
Some assert and try to sort it quickly.
Some slow things down and look for whatโ€™s going wrong.

None of these responses are wrong, but they can be misunderstood.

Thatโ€™s why teams need to understand not only what drives each other when things are going well, but how each person changes when things are not.

Sounds positive, right?
