Did we let our profession get to crisis point?
A bit about us... Mel Evans and Derek Bartels
Where do we begin? To say Derek knows everyone is an understatement!
We exist to inspire and guide schools toward impactful, contemporary educational practices that prepare learners for the challenges and opportunities of the future. Well, it all started back in the early 2010s when Derek was out and about working with schools to adopt contemporary learning practices, when he stumbled upon a young, spirited teacher named Mel—someone with big ideas and an even bigge

Seeing great practice is only the beginning.
School visits are easy to get excited about.
The challenge is what happens when you get home.
Too often, educators return inspired by what they've seen, but uncertain about what it means for their own context.
The real work is translation.
That's why EduShift Transformation Tours are designed differently.
Not simply to showcase innovative practice.
To help schools make sense of it, connect it to their strategic priorities, and identify practical next steps for meaningful change.
Because seeing great practice is only the beginning.
What is the biggest challenge your school faces when trying to translate new ideas into practice?

"What can we change? We're the adults."

Too often when a young person becomes disengaged, we focus on fixing the learner.
Perhaps we should first examine the system.
The timetable.
The structures.
The assessment.
The relationships.
The learning experiences.
If a learner is struggling, maybe the first question shouldn't be:
"What's wrong with the child?"
Maybe it should be:
"What can we change?"

While many schools are still debating whether students should use AI, organisations across the globe are embracing it and investing heavily in helping employees work alongside it.
The workforce is not preparing for a future where AI might become important.
It is responding to a present in which it already is.
The workforce has already changed.
The question is whether schooling has noticed.
Our latest blog explores what workforce reports from organisations like Udemy and the World Economic Forum are telling us, and what that means for curriculum, assessment, AI, learner agency and the structures underpinning modern schooling.

“How can you tell me to just ignore it?” 🎶
Young people taking real action.
From shy and insecure students to young people prepared to stand in front of world industry leaders and call for change, this is learner agency at its strongest displayed in the recently released documentary.
Recently in Perth, I had the privilege of spending time with Ruby Rodgers, a 16-year-old passionate and effective agent of change, along with her dad accompanying her on guitar. I also heard from Damon Gameau, film director, actor and creator of Future Council, That Sugar Film and more.
Ruby and the young people involved in Future Council are not waiting politely on the sidelines. They are stepping forward, asking better questions, challenging the adults in the room, and taking on real-world issues with courage, clarity and purpose.
This is what we mean when we talk about contemporary learning. Not just preparing young people for the future, but trusting them to help shape it.
