A new tool that combines AI with medical expertise is being used to help clinicians monitor trends in serious fungal infections in cancer patients.
Cancer patients are prone to fungal infections because cancer, and many cancer treatments, weaken the body’s normal immune defences. Invasive fungal infections often lead to death and place a significant cost burden on the healthcare system.
Developed in collaboration between RMIT University, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the University of Melbourne, Royal Melbourne Hospital and BioGrid, the new tool, called EINSTEIN AI, will allow for the automatic detection of infections in vulnerable patients.
Using electronically recorded information about patients (e.g. reports on pathology tests and CT scans), EINSTEIN AI reads reports, looking for clues that can help join the dots in the data.
The tool aims to give medical teams greater situational awareness, allowing for more prompt and better-informed medical care.

We're investing in health 🩺
Last week, we announced an investment of $30 million to bolster our health and care capability and meet critical skills needs in Victoria. 🏥
We'll use the funds to upgrade existing infrastructure, deliver new equipment and build on our Bundoora campus' state-of-the-art technology so that our students have access to simulated real-world medical environments where they can develop the skills they need to be job ready. 🩻
