Postdoctoral researcher Dr Katie Moon watched too much Captain Planet as a kid and is attempting "the completely normal and totally achievable goal of saving the planet" 🌏

Working in our TIGRR Lab in the School of BioSciences, Dr Moon's area of research is DNA from living and extinct species - and using that information to better inform the future of wildlife conservation.

When good flower neighbours become good friends 🌸 New research including scientists from the School of BioSciences and School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Sciences found that neighbouring plants help those plants that struggle to survive alone. BFFs! (best flower friends forever).

Their research was published in PNAS Journal 👏 Tap to learn more about the Mayfield Community Ecology lab's research in this space ➡️ https://unimelb.me/4er8wDh

What can the massive explosion of a dying star tell us about the origins of our universe? And... what makes them explode in the first place? 💥

Dr Yi Shuen Christine Lee from the School of Physics is part of a team at the OzGrav - ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery searching for gravitational waves released from dying stars, which contain a wealth of information. She shares the latest update from their research, as they prepare to detect and analyse the next core-collapse supernovae ➡️ https://unimelb.me/43WWTzv

For the first time, UniMelb and University of Tasmania scientists have determined that the wave-affected part of the Antarctic marginal ice zone is 35-180km wide, providing vital information for ship navigation and understanding the crash in Antarctic sea ice extent 🧊

Scientists used 1980s satellite radar techniques to examine the marginal ice zone, which plays the important role of shielding ice from waves and sustaining marine life.

Run! It's Godzilla El Nino! Sort of? 🦖 Scientists predict a "monster" El Nino this year, increasing the likelihood of floods, drought and heatwaves. The threat of drought brings anxiety to Australians - but this El Nino-zilla might not be as monstrous as we think. Tap to learn more from Dr Mandy Freund in Pursuit ➡️ https://unimelb.me/43nDqaQ
