Did you know it's Refugee Week?
This week is a reminder of the importance of listening to stories, valuing lived experience and creating communities where everyone has the opportunity to belong.
This year’s theme, “A Million Stories,” highlights that behind every individual is a unique journey shaped by courage, hope and the pursuit of safety and belonging.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to feel safe, connected and supported within their community. Every story deserves to be heard.
As part of Refugee Week, Communicare and Centrecare will be hosting a FREE community event this Sunday 21 June at Harmony Fields, Maddington, providing an opportunity for connection, conversation and shared community experience in a welcoming space.

Last week, some of our talented Badminton students competed in the 2026 SSWA Interschool Badminton Tournament, held at Kingsway Stadium.
The college was proudly represented by three male doubles pairs and one female doubles pair. As in previous years, the standard of competition was extremely high, with strong schools from across the state in attendance. All of our teams performed commendably, with each pair recording at least one win during the tournament—an excellent achievement given the quality of opposition.
The standout performers on the day were Cromwell Robles and Jarold Briones, who secured three wins in the group stage and narrowly missed qualification for the finals. Their consistency, teamwork and tactical play were a highlight of the competition.
Across the day, all players demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, resilience and mutual support, reflecting the values of Sevenoaks Senior College. Well done to all players for a fantastic day of badminton and for representing the school with pride, and thanks to Coach Middleton for facilitating this fun event!

Sevenoaks Senior College was privileged to welcome Dr David Morrison as part of the 2026 Bayliss Youth Lecture, presenting on the topic “Polymers, 3D Printing and Innovation in Healthcare.” The presentation was an eye-opening experience for students, as Dr Morrison shared how chemistry, polymers, engineering and innovation are being used in real-life healthcare applications.
One of the most engaging parts of the presentation was learning about the work carried out by Dr Morrison and his team at Royal Perth Hospital. Students were able to see how scientific knowledge is applied beyond the classroom to solve real-world medical problems. The examples shared helped students understand the importance of chemistry in improving patient care and supporting doctors in complex medical procedures.
The lecture also encouraged students to think deeply about future careers in science, medicine, engineering and technology. Many students asked thoughtful questions related to health, medical innovation and the use of polymers in the human body. Their curiosity showed how much they were inspired by the presentation and how valuable it was in connecting classroom learning with real-life applications.
We sincerely thank Dr Morrison for taking the time to visit us and for sharing his knowledge, experience and inspiring work with our students.

Some of our Student Guild and Harmony Across Borders Committee along with teacher, Mr Parkar, joined attendees from several other schools for a valuable community engagement event hosted by Western Australia Police Force for the Muslim Community this week.
The event brought together students, educators, and community members to promote understanding, respect, and connection.
The program began with a welcome and housekeeping, followed by an Welcome to Country by Sevenoaks Alumni, Aaliyah Nestoridis. A recitation from the Holy Qur’an provided a reflective opening to the event.
Throughout the morning, attendees heard from a range of speakers who shared important insights on community cohesion, policing, and collaboration. The session also included a personal reflection from a WA Police officer, offering a meaningful perspective on building trust within diverse communities.
Speakers included:
• Dr Umneea Ahmad Khan (Sevenoaks Board Member)
• Ms Aaliyah Nestoridis (Sevenoaks and Polly Farmer Foundation Follow the Dream Alumni)
• Commissioner of Police Mr Col Blanch APM
• Mr Aneeq Vohra and Mr Ibrahim Maroof
• Sheikh Yahya Ibrahim
• Mrs Haneen Al Bhadily
• Police Officer Adam Muhammad Shahrin

WOW WOW WOW what an incredible feast we shared to celebrate Eid Al-Adha on Wednesday. A HUGE thank you to our incredible Muslim staff for treating us to an array of incredible and delicious dishes. It was wonderful to come together to learn more about the traditions of Eid al-Adha and embrace the rich cultural diversity of our College community.
Eid al-Adha is a special event in the Islamic calendar. Our Muslim staff and students celebrate this event every year. Known as the 'Festival of Sacrifice,' it commemorates the Prophet Abraham's faith in God during his journey to Mecca. His is a story revered in Islam, Christianity and Judaism. This sacred time reminds us of the common values in the Abrahamic faiths: belief in divine wisdom, sacrifice for the sake of others and compassion to those less fortunate. Muslims celebrate with morning prayers, festive gatherings, and charitable acts - particularly sharing meat with those in need. These traditions beautifully embody the spirit of community and generosity.

We are for Reconciliation.
Our Koolark and Student Services teams arranged a meaningful activity for students and staff this week in support of Reconciliation Week. The activity prompted us to consider these questions as a collective – how does your team influence your wider community’s reconciliation journey? What actions will your group commit to to be 'All In' for reconciliation? By coming together to display their commitments, participants make a collective statement that reconciliation requires all of us. These statements formed a shared art installation, which is proudly on display in our Courtyard area.
For more than 30 years, Australians have officially marked National Reconciliation Week – a week bookended by the anniversaries of the 1967 referendum (27 May) and the Mabo decision (3 June).
Reconciliation has always been powered by a people’s movement led by First Nations peoples and supported by allies in communities across the country.
For decades, this movement has worked to deepen understanding of Australia’s true history and confront the ongoing impacts of injustice, inequality and exclusion.
It is hard, often exhausting work that requires strength and resilience, but it shows what is possible when we move forward together, led by First Nations voices.
This is what ‘All In’ represents: all of us, side by side, building relationships grounded in truth, trust and respect.
We urge all Australians to be 'All In' this National Reconciliation Week.

Heads up! From Monday 25 May to Friday 19 June, Transperth Transit Officers will be on the lookout for students doing the right thing at stations and on trains.
You might get a reward card if you:
· Show respect to others
· Stay safe on platforms and trains
· Help out other passengers
This program is about recognising students who make good choices and help keep themselves and others safe.
Transit Officers will also be providing feedback to your school throughout the campaign to help make sure everyone can get where they need to go safely.
If you get a card:
· Take it to the Cafe/Canteen
· Grab a free icy pole on us! It’s as simple as that!
So let’s see what you’ve got – we want to give away those icy poles. It’s our way of saying thanks for doing the right thing.
From PTA Educate and the team of dedicated Transit Officers – thanks for doing the right thing.
