On Friday 5 June, a group of Year 7 and 8 AEP English students attended a Young Writers Collective Workshop facilitated by the Literature Centre at the State Library.

During this incursion, students spent the day with author and screenwriter Kathryn Lefroy, who has written a number of novels for young readers, as well as the screenplay for recently released film Whale Shark Jack. Across the course of the day, students practiced generating ideas for stories, explored how to write a captivating exposition, and learned some skills relating to screenwriting by adapting a passage. The day ended with some entertaining performances of their scripts!

It was a great day for students to write creatively and share their ideas among peers.

Our Year 9 student leaders recently had the opportunity to spend the day with like-minded students from across the state at Altitude Day, an outstanding leadership event delivered by yLead that Churchlands Secondary School has proudly been involved with for many years.

The day began with students networking and building connections with peers from other schools before participating in engaging workshops led by the yLead team, designed to strengthen their leadership skills and confidence. Students also heard from inspiring guest speakers who shared their personal journeys and experiences, encouraging our students to continue developing as positive and effective leaders.

YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY - ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE

As the Earth moves beyond a population of 8.3 billion people, it is the reality that we are facing many environmental issues, especially in relation to how we use our resources and the impacts resulting from industrialisation and urbanisation. Sustainability is an excellent goal that we should be aiming for in our individual lives, as well as at local, regional, national and global scales.

Year 10 HASS students have been researching examples of environmental change this Term.

They have presented an overview of their choice of environmental change, causes, impacts, solutions and future management in a variety of ways including posters, power points and informal peer teaching.

Examples of environmental change included: habitat loss, invasive species, endangered species, acid rain, pollution, land degradation, e-waste and nuclear waste to name a few.

One class enjoyed the last days of sunshine to partner up and peer teach each other on their researched issues. The students enjoyed this experience, changing up the learning activity and environment.

On Wednesday 27 May students participating in follow the dream tutoring were invited to the Aboriginal Veterans Service, held at the WA State War Memorial in Kings Park.

The service started with a traditional dance performed by Trinity College students and musical performances by Winthrop Primary School and the Mount Lawley choir. Two Aboriginal soldiers that fought in WW1 and WW2 were honoured and plaques given to their families.

Students then enjoyed morning tea in the Old Tea Pavillion and walked to the Kings Park Education centre to view the premiere screening of Not Forgotten, which was written, directed and produced by Dr Glen Stasiuk of Black Russian Productions. This is a short documentary that captures the stories of Aboriginal Anzacs form Western Australia who were sadly killed in action in World War 1 and who weren’t yet memorialized with commemorative plaques along the Kings Park Avenues of Honour.

Jazz Club of WA - Battle of the Bands

Congratulations to Luca DB, Aidan F and Bryn F who performed at the Jazz Club of WA’s Battle of the Bands competition on 12 May. Performing in a traditional hot jazz style, they dazzled the audience and took out 1st prize for their swinging and engaging performance.

It is the 2nd year in a row that a Churchlands jazz combo has been awarded 1st prize in the Battle of the Bands competition which we hope continues next year.

World’s Greatest Shave at Churchlands Senior High School

Today the Year 11 and 12 students at Churchlands did their bit to help raise awareness and fundraise for the Leukaemia Foundation to support Australians affected by blood cancer.

The atmosphere was electric with the buzz of clippers, the snipping of scissors and cool tunes from DJ Cooper and his crew. The Year 11s ran a cake stall to raise money while our brave Year 12s shaved and cut their hair.

The students certainly brought the energy and enthusiasm and are all now sporting many new looks!!!
The 2026 goal was set at $10k and so far they have raised $15,725 with the Year 11 cake stall raising an additional $422.

Congratulations to all the legends who participated and organised a very successful and fun event for this worthy cause.

It is not too late to donate, and any amount is greatly appreciated.
