Founded in 2016, Studio J is an independent dance studio which brings together the wide & varied forms of Indian dance, under the one roof. Our huge range of classes offers everything from Indian classical dance to Bollywood, folk & modern cross-cultural. Studio J celebrates the diversity of Indian dance, whilst also respecting its traditions. Our teachers are Melbourne based artists of South Asia

Straight from their Sydney performances, our Bharatanatyam Advanced group will be re-creating this piece for showcase 2026

In praise of Goddess Durga, this Chamunda/Navarna mantra features Bharatanatyam alongside reviving tribal goddess and demon worship practises that influenced the art in pre colonial times (like trance steps, head rolls, wide stances) 🔥🔥🔥 New students welcome (please DM prior to enrolling to ensure suitability) 🙏🏼

Never too young to dream.
Never too old to start.

At 17, I believed it was too late to start formal dance training

At 32, I finally started learning Bharatanatyam.

This week, almost 17 years later, I got the opportunity to perform at the iconic Sydney Opera House thanks to the incredible 🙏🏼

I started Studio J built on that same belief: that adults deserve a space to learn, grow, and experience dance simply for themselves.

You don't need to know where the journey will lead when you begin. Sometimes you just need to start.

You never know where it might take you.
