All physical activities improve vision as they are integrated with all other messages from the different senses into one whole picture (perception), within the brain. Books and songs play a vital role in speech and vision development as babies and young children learn the rhythms of speech and speech patterns and start associating words with pictures. Understanding the relationship between words and pictures will affect a child’s ability to visualise and help them make the leap cognitively from concrete to symbolic.

Children’s eyes need exercises, just like their limbs do. Visual tracking is done at Treasure bag time for this reason. Try to do a few exercises each day at home with your child. Use a favourite toy or balloon for catching, so your child has to track the oncoming object from far to near. This skill is essential at school for copying from the board to a book, for example.

Vision and other senses are related to language. Vision and language form the foundations upon which academic learning will prosper.
Speech enables children to match visual impressions to different movements and to visualise words. Good eye teaming and improved eye movements through visual exercises makes matching and awareness of colours easy.

Every child should have the strength to cross the overhead ladder by the time they are school age. At GymbaROO we gradually build children up to this state, but some children are able to hang and swing across earlier. It will depend on the individual, their exposure to this skill, their willingness to try, and a combination of other factors. We do encourage children to attempt Brachiation on a regular basis.

The advantages of swinging through the monkey bars or from the trapeze are: hand strength - improving grip of opposition of the thumb and the first finger which will later affect hand writing, improve vision and eye-hand coordination, developing the chest, increasing lung capacity and respiration, and developing muscle tone and balance.

Hand and shoulder strength are crucial for swinging along under monkey bars or from the trapeze. Practice builds strength and control. Hand strength development is essential for initiating fine motor control activities which will dictate the level of elementary success in activities like writing.
Climbing ladders will also improve hand strength, coordination, motor planning concentration, vision and body rhythm.
As children grasp and release each rung and coordinate both arms and legs they learn to maintain focus and balance.

If a child can’t hang by their hands they will have trouble holding a pencil for example. It is a skill that should be encouraged in the early years, to strengthen hands and fingers for the years ahead which require it as a basic, bare minimum imperative to success. Not enough appreciation is credited to how hand strength outcomes are established, but Brachiation is at its core.

Brachiation is defined as the locomotion accomplished by swinging the arms from one hold to the other. Brachiation is closely related to hand development. Providing children with opportunities to brachiate will give them the chance to strengthen their hands, including grip, dexterity, finger isolation (an essential skill in communicating ie pointing) and eventually holding a pencil.
