🤟AUSLAN AMBASSADORS🤟

Congratulations to our 2026 Somerville Rise Primary School AUSLAN Ambassadors!

We are proud to announce our 2026 AUSLAN Ambassadors, a dedicated group of students who will play an important role in promoting AUSLAN and Deaf awareness throughout our school community.

As AUSLAN Ambassadors, these students will help share and teach AUSLAN signs during school assemblies, assist with assembly presentations, support their peers in learning and using AUSLAN, and encourage the use of signing across the school. Through their leadership, they will help create a more inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to communicate, connect, and learn.

Our AUSLAN Ambassadors demonstrate the values of kindness, creativity, and curiosity as they inspire others to embrace AUSLAN and celebrate different ways of communicating. ✨

🗣️PHONICS🗣️

1/2A and 1/2B split into their Grade 1 and Grade 2 groups each morning for their cohort phonics program, making sure everyone is learning at the right level and being challenged.
Miss Christy has been really pleased with the effort from the Grade 2 students as they build their skills in encoding and decoding words.
Lately, they have been working on words that end in -ous and -ion and have shown great curiosity along the way.

Well done, Grade 2s, for your effort in phonics each day and your ability to apply your new learning in other areas such as writing and spelling mastery. Keep it up!✨

🧪🥼STEM🥼🧪

Our Junior School students have been working on the Physical Science outcomes in STEM this term, which focus on how things move.
Foundation students have explored how the shape of objects impact their movement (eg sliding vs rolling) and the influence of the materials objects are made from (eg which balls bounce the highest.
Year 1 and 2 students focused on the forces of push and pull. They experimented with ways to make a moving object go faster or slower and how to change its direction.

This sprint, 5/6B have been developing their own sequels to the picture story book 'The Hueys in the New Jumper'!
The students have focused on using Oliver Jeffers' literary techniques in their writing to create entertaining narratives for their buddies in the junior classes.
Students are looking forward to reading their stories to their buddies and sharing their amazing work with the school.

🚀☄️🪐SOLAR SYSTEM🪐☄️🚀

Students in 1/2A have been exploring the wonders of the Solar System while learning how to write detailed information reports. They have been practising using descriptive words, connective sentences, and interesting facts to make their writing engaging and informative. As part of their learning, students discovered amazing facts such as Earth being the only planet that can sustain life and Venus being the hottest planet in our Solar System, even hotter than Mercury!

The class worked hard to organise their ideas, use topic-specific vocabulary, and connect their sentences clearly using words such as because, also, and however. We are so proud of the enthusiasm and creativity students have shown in their writing and learning about space!

⚫️💛🔴NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK🔴💛⚫️

As part of our acknowledgement and celebration of National Reconciliation Week, we were thrilled to welcome Sean Choolburra to our school for a special free incursion.

Born and raised in Townsville, Sean’s ancestors are Gu-Gu-Yalanji, Kalkadoon, Kandju and Bwgcolman peoples from around Townsville and Palm Island. Sean is a charismatic, vibrant and captivating performer who combines humour, storytelling and cultural knowledge to create an engaging experience for students.

Through dance, stories, painting, fire creation and didgeridoo playing, students had the opportunity to learn about Aboriginal culture and traditions in an interactive and meaningful way.
Students engaged in singing, dancing and participating throughout the performance.

History and Writing – Life and Land Inquiry

This term, students have been exploring history through our inquiry unit, Life and Land: The Impact of Colonies on People and the Environment. To integrate our learning in writing with inquiry, students researched an important woman from the colonies or a significant person involved in the colonisation of Australia.

Students worked hard to gather information and write a biography using the subheadings: Basic Information, Early Life, Main Achievements, Contributions and Impact, and Interesting Facts. This task encouraged students to develop their research, note-taking, and informational writing skills while deepening their understanding of historical figures and their influence on Australia’s past.
Students were then able to choose how to present their work, either through a poster or a PowerPoint presentation, and were encouraged to include multimodal elements such as images, visuals, and design features to enhance their presentations.

To conclude the task, students confidently presented their biographies to the class, developing their speaking and listening skills while sharing their knowledge with others. It has been wonderful to see students build confidence in public speaking and demonstrate their creativity, effort, and historical understanding throughout this unit.
