Understanding infection control doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming.

Total Infection Control (TIC) was the brainchild of a number of healthcare professionals, who saw the need to provide relevant and relatable infection control training for dental practices across Australia and New Zealand. Our short online courses are broken up into manageable modules and have been designed to be scientifically objective, intuitive, entertaining, and easy to understand. Not only d

THERE ARE THOSE OUT THERE WHO WILL ATTACK THOSE WHO ARE TRYING TO SAVE YOU ON COSTS WHILST MAINTAINING COMPLIANCE

Most of the so-called “requirements” in your dental WHS and Infection control are over-cooked.

Many of the products you have in your steri area, you do not need.
Spore testing is one of these items.

Each year your steriliser is validated by a technician. Sure, whenever you are in need of a tuneup, just call the tech. We support this.
However for annual validation of your steriliser there will be general checks, possibly nothing will be altered on the steriliser, and to validate the steriliser, spore tests are run as a means of the final process of the validation.

Here are some key points that not many understand (not even the industry corporates understand how these things work):

1. Validation is NOT servicing. Validation is nothing more than testing if the steriliser can reach operational functionality and measurement too here is the spore test

2. Spore testing is NOT mandatory – never has been

3. Spore testing is not even recommended as of 2003

4. The steriliser itself provides more information in comparison to any spore test

5. The metallic Process Challenge Device (PCD) coupled with the class II indicator overrules any spore test

So why do spore testing at all right?

The answer is inspectors like to see those stickers on the side of the steriliser and tick off that box they have for your steriliser validation.
It then poses the question: “does this mean that we are paying $1000 plus for a sticker?”

YES!

So X-Labs say “NO”. How about you just utilise the remote spore testing packs for $199? You get the same result, same sticker and same certificate of validation, under the requirements of AS 5359:2023.

Unfortunately, this takes business away from those who sell spore tests, and they get irate and go on the attack against those trying to help dental practices. Instead of competing and dropping those spore tests down to the prices they REALLY should be, they want to make massive ridiculous profits. So what do they do? They make up nonsense within the dental market, but their message is clear:

“We cannot compete because we love making big money and do not want to lose cash, which will also benefit our dental clients, so we will slander and bad mouth those who demonstrate how to validate sterilisers in a more cost effective way”.

None of them can justify anything they are saying. It’s just all word-of-mouth garbage.

Here are the FACTS that all dentists should know, and here are the references to back this up:

1. AS 5369:2023 section 10.3.1, states that a “COMPETENT PERSON” is the minimal requirement for performing validation on a steriliser. But WHY is this? WHY does it not state “technician”?

Because even until today, spore testing is run routinely in house by many dental practices, medical centres, hospitals and alike, and they are run typically weekly, fortnightly and monthly (depending on the organisation’s requirements). Therefore, it is not reasonable to consistently call a technician to run these spore tests for validation purposes.

2. Spore testing is NOT mandatory!
Because as of 2002, most B-Class sterilisers have a digital chart printout that provides MORE information than any spore test can provide. This is confirmed inside ISO 11138-1:2003 which is directly referenced inside AS 5369:2023.

3. If you run a spore test and it fails, what then? Typically you will be provided with a loaner steriliser whilst the technician repairs the broken steriliser. But this does not resolve the situation. There is still a BREACH. Therefore, the only way you can isolate the breach is to recall ALL instruments from ALL patients right back to the last time you had a PASS result. How many patients would you see in 12 months? Thousands? Tens of thousands? It is a disaster just waiting to happen.

So why are spore tests status quo? It’s not because companies are trying to pull the wool over your head. They simply do not know. They will email and call you implementing that they are the “experts” in this sector, but if that was the case then how come there are HUGE breaches in sterilising?

It’s not just that they do not know, it’s worse, many of them do not want to L I S T E N.

They just want you to keep buying their expensive spore tests.
We say NO. You do not need to. Not legally, not by way of any standard, and not by any mandate.

Ask the corporate industry to provide hard evidence where a technician is required. Ask the corporate industry to highlight in a STANDARD (not a guideline, or national framework etc), but an actual STANDARD such as ISO, that demonstrates spore testing is mandatory or where a technician is required.

Further to this, always always always make them liable for what they tell you. Ask them to provide you with liability towards the information they provide you. They won’t do it, they never do this. It’s all talk and no action.

When they are beaten out of the market by remote spore testing they result to shock tactics and childish behaviour, and in the end it all falls onto the dental practices which is incredibly unfair for you and your patients.

Remember it’s YOUR practice. You are the one liable for everything at the end of the day. The only reliable processes come from ISO scientific standards.

YOUR ONLY DEFENCE AGAINST VIRUSES IN HANDPIECES

DON’T TAKE THE RISK!

The X-PCD is run in every sterilising cycle where handpieces are present in order to validate them.

If you are not using the X-PCD and X-Class Indicators. then you cannot validate your handpieces.

Don’t take the risk!

YOU ARE PAYING $1000 PER STERILISER VALIDATION EACH YEAR. WHY? $199 GET’s THE SAME VALIDATION

Dentists are throwing their money away on things they don’t need. Annual steriliser validation is one of this money burners.

Use remote validation.

LET'S CHECK YOUR FINANCIALS SO FAR....

Have you applied ISO yet? It doesn't cost anything.

Those 1700 practices across ANZ who have been accredited or who have applied ISO into their practice are:

- Not spending thousands on annual validation
- Not spending on needless consumables
- Applying their staff labour hours into more practical areas such as patient handling and advertising and social media marketing
- Workflow is increasing each day

Many dentists are obsessed with flooding their practice with patients but they are not realising the more patients that come through that door, the more cost is incurred, hence the more staff you need and the more tax you have to pay.

Essentially your service quality goes DOWN!

And there is no marketing, SEO, sales or business consultants on the planet who can fix this, despite how flashy their advertising and and testimonials.

If you compare your non-ISO compliant practice to those who are ISO setup, here is a snapshot:

ISO COMPLIANT PRACTICES: Annual spend (eg:) $70,000
YOU: more than $200,0000

Are You happy to give this money away? Because the reality is this is what you are doing.

You have to rely on yourself.

Simply utilise ISO. It doesn't cost you anything. So why not?

NOTICE HOW THE ATO ARE TARGETING THE MIDDLE CLASS? AUDITING MANY DENTAL PRACTICES AND THEIR AFFILIATE BUSINESSES

Money talks.

But how can ISO help you with this?

Dental practices are not looking what is right in front of their eyes and seeing how easy things can be.

Does not require you to sign up to some course, or some scheme, or some "Get Rich Quick" Scheme.

Just follow what the Australian National Law requires you to follow:

AS 5369:2023 and the ISO/EN references.

By doing this your practice will:

- Conform to all safety requirements
- Ensure your staff are confident and trained
- Ensure that no patient will be infected by way of blood transmission
- Ensure all audits will pass
- Reduce your consumable costs
- Reduce your labour costs
- Speed up your processes

It's all related to CASH.

So the ATO wants to ensure that you are claiming the correct amounts, therefore your paperwork should be in order and your costs should come down.

Conforming to ISO does all of this for you.

BOWIE DICK TEST FOR YOUR STERILISER? NO SUCH THING!

On the morning cycle of your steriliser you may be using either:

- an orange plastic helix device
- an aluminium helix device
- a Green Card
- a box bowie dick pack test
- a standard indicator strip

ALL of the above do not work for your dental office based practice B-Class benchtop steriliser.

- The orange plastic device was invented in the 1970's as a means to be used in EVERY cycle with handpieces - and today there is a flaw in most of those devices - check the crack at the back of the device near the top screw - it allows steam to breach the top too easily - plus its plastic - therefore its not a challenge to any handpiece

- The aluminium device does not represent any handpiece and is the WORST device to use in a steriliser as it will damage your steriliser by creating galvanising particles that will corrode metals, oxide deposits will also develop in the chamber, as will staining of the chamber - never use these!

- The Green Card was invented to measure 4Kg of linin in American large hospital sterilisers - you do not sterilise linen, you do not have a large steam steriliser and your practice is not in America - why these are even being sold into the ANZ market is a mystery

- 7kg Linen packs - used for large hospital steam sterilisers to measure linen - you do not sterilise linen! Period, and you are NOT a hospital.

- Standard indictor strips - totally useless in any morning cycle as there is no instruments in that cycle to sterilise - its empty.

So WHY are these being sold into the dental market? Many dental practices believe that the mere fact they are being sold in abundance simply justifies their use - "everyone is using them so they must be compliant" - totally false.

The fact is no one really knows why they are being sold, not even the ones selling them know, but its just the norm.

However the FACTS remain:

1. They do not work
2. They are NOT mandatory
3. You're wasting your money
