An important distinction!
What do we mean by ROOT?
Roots are the etymological ancestors of a word. When we look at the wordโs journey through time, the roots are the words that were stops along that journey. In the example here, the words on the tree all evolved from motus, the past participle of the Latinate root movere, or from movere itself.
What do we mean by BASE?
Every word is or has a base. A base is an element in Present Day English that carries the primary meaning of a word. A base is considered โfreeโ if it can stand alone as a word. If it only surfaces attached to one or more other elements, it is considered โboundโ. The bound base is found in many English words, while the free base can stand alone as a word or have other elements attached to it.
