There is a version of success that looks right from the outside and feels hollow from the inside.

A lot of professional firm owners know that feeling. The business is performing. The clients are happy. And yet something is missing. Maybe it's a sense of meaning, of direction, of genuinely loving what you have built.

At Opening Gates, I believe that the gap is not a personal problem. It is a signal that the business has drifted from the person running it. And the way back is not to push harder; it is to reconnect with who you are, what you value, and what you actually want this business to give you.

That is where the Opening Gates planning process begins. And it is where everything else starts to shift.

The hardest part isn't doing the work. It is deciding that a different way is possible.

When I redesigned my accounting firm around my life plan rather than her billing targets, something unexpected happened. I became more focused, more present, and more effective, and the business became more profitable as a result.

Energy follows meaning.

When you are clear on why you are doing what you are doing, and when the business is structured to support the life you want, you bring a completely different quality of attention to the work.

At Opening Gates, the formula has proven this across hundreds of business owners over 25 years.

Most business planning starts with revenue targets, KPIs, and 90-day sprints.
At Opening Gates, it starts with your life plan.

Not because the numbers don't matter, they absolutely do, but because a business built without a life plan at its centre will always create pressure that feels impossible to resolve. You optimise for growth and somehow feel worse. You hit the targets and wonder why it is not enough.

When the life plan comes first, the business plan has a point of reference that actually means something. Decisions get clearer. Energy comes back. Profit follows focus.

This is the formula I developed after redesigning my own accounting firm from the ground up, and then starting Opening Gates, and it has worked for hundreds of people since.

I was sitting in a conference room in Queenstown when it hit me.
My accounting firm was thriving. By every external measure, I had built something successful. But somewhere along the way, my business had stopped working for my life; my life had started working for my business.

That moment changed everything for me. Not because I walked away from what I had built, but because I redesigned it entirely, around my life first, and my business second.

That is what Opening Gates exists to do. To show accounting firm owners that you do not have to lose in life to win in business. The two are not mutually exclusive, and there is a formula that proves it.

If that story sounds a little too familiar, book a free consultation with me. It starts with one conversation.

When did you last take a full day off?

Not a partial day. Not a weekend where you checked in once. A full day where the business ran without you because it was designed to.

For most owner-led businesses in Australia, it seems like that day is harder to name than it should be.

We're about to begin the second half of 2026 and for many owners, this is the point where fatigue accumulated quietly over six months stops being silent.

It shows up as slower decisions, longer recovery time after a normal working week, reduced capacity for strategic thinking, and an increasing physical cost the business is no longer covering. Feeling a little under the weather lately? Sure, it's cold and flu season, but it's also the season where holding it all together too tightly means you're more likely to become unravelled.

This is something I ask in almost every first conversation with a new client; you might find it useful too.

If one key person left your business this month, what would break, and who would be picking up the work?

Team fragility is one of the highest-cost problems in owner-led businesses, because it does not look like a problem at first. It looks like a performance management issue, a hiring market problem, or a run of bad luck with people. In most cases it is structural. The business is built around people, not repeatable systems. Accountability is implicit, not designed. When someone leaves, the owner fills the gap.

That pattern compresses capacity, hardens owner-dependency, and shows up in the owner's body long before it shows up in the financials. Energy, sleep, recovery, focus, patience at home. All of it gets borrowed against.

If your business is one resignation away from a real problem, let's talk about building a Business By Design where this stops being the key issue for your biz.

Yes, of course you should be concerned about tax planning in June. I did spend many years as an accountant, so I certainly recognise the pressure that 1 June brings, but...

How's that weight your shoulders are carrying by Wednesday afternoon? The 4am thinking that does not switch off? The way you snapped at someone you love last week and did not have the energy to repair it properly?

EOFY is important, but if your business is running you into the ground, profits won't automatically fix that.

If you are working harder than you were twelve months ago and the profit does not reflect it, it's a structure problem as much as a tax problem. And the structure is taking it out on your body.

Ready to feel better for the new financial year? Let's create a Business By Design and change it for good.

Have you accepted exhaustion as part of running a successful business?

If you are working sixty-hour weeks, skipping meals and answering emails at midnight, your business is not thriving; it is damaging your health. I see this every week with the people I consult, and what they all share is the belief that working harder and longer is their only option.

The truth is that chronic stress changes how you make decisions, how you lead your team and how your body functions over time. Profitable, sustainable businesses are built by owners who protect their time, their energy and their health with the same discipline they apply to their numbers. At Opening Gates, this is the work we do together.

Book a free consult and we will identify where the stress is coming from in your business and what to change first.
