For families with kids doing exams: we get asked this a lot at the moment - how do I support my child through exams without making things worse? 😊

A few things that actually help:

Food and sleep are more important than an extra hour of study. A decent meal, an early night, and a calm house the evening before will do more for their performance than cramming until midnight. If there's one thing worth being firm about, it's this.

The morning of the exam - keep it calm. If your child is sitting down to do hard practice questions or intense revision on the morning of an exam, gently encourage them to ease off. At that point it's more likely to spike their anxiety than help. Light revision is fine - re-reading notes, going over a summary, reminding themselves of things they already know. The goal on exam morning is to walk in feeling settled, not wired.

If they're fixating on how an exam went - gently redirect them. Students often come out convinced they've failed when they haven't, or spend the afternoon replaying every question they're unsure about. Once it's done it's done, and the energy is better spent on whatever's next. Sometimes just acknowledging that it's stressful and moving on together is the most helpful thing you can do.

Hope everyone's getting through the week okay

With exams starting this week - here are 3 things that will actually make a difference πŸ‘‡

Rather than trying to 'study harder' and 'stress less,' follow these three practical tips to perform better.

Sharing this for any families with a Year 11 or 12 student working on drafts for their English assessments right now πŸ‘‹

With exams coming up, one thing we see consistently is students losing marks on analysis - not because they don't know the text, but because of how they're writing about it.

The most common problem: students explain what a quote means rather than breaking down how the author has used a specific technique and why. They describe what's happening in the text rather than digging into the language choices themselves - what the technique does, what effect it has on the reader, and what that reveals about the text's broader ideas.

Analysis in English isn't about showing you've read the text. It's about showing you understand how the author has deliberately constructed meaning through specific language choices - and being able to articulate that clearly and precisely.

We've shared a carousel on our page breaking this down step by step if it's useful to pass on 😊

Really proud to share this one πŸŽ‰

One of our students went from a C to an A in English in just 6 months of working together.

He's a bright kid and the issue wasn't the content. It was that he'd sit down in an exam, read the question, and not really know where to start. That uncertainty would spiral into panic, and the response he wrote wouldn't reflect what he actually knew.

What changed was learning how to slow down at the start of an exam rather than speed up. We helped him learn how to read a question properly, what the verb is asking, what the scope is, and what a good response actually needs to include.

Skills like that don't get taught explicitly in most classrooms. That's the gap we try to fill with our individualised lessons.

Massive congratulations to him β€” the result is entirely his πŸ‘

Sharing a short video from one of our tutors Isabella that might be useful for any high school students. We're at Week 5 - assessments are starting to land, and the term is moving faster than it feels. This video is a good one to pass on if your child has been putting off getting on top of things.

Rather than overwhelming advice, Isabella explains three things students can do today to get back on track:

πŸ“‚ Review what's been covered so far this term and find the gaps
πŸ“… Write down every assessment and due date coming up this term
πŸ“‹ Make a rough plan for when to actually start preparing for each one

No four-hour study sessions. Just a starting point - because for most students, convincing yourself to begin is genuinely the hardest part.

Feel free to share with your child if it's helpful 😊

English Standard is not the easier option. Here's the data πŸ‘‡

Only 14% of English Standard students score above 80 in the HSC. For Band 6 (90+), it's less than 1%. But in English Advanced 67% of students score above 80.

A lot of schools push students toward Standard when they're genuinely capable of Advanced. The assumption that it's "safer" or "less stressful" isn't always accurate - and it can seriously limit your ATAR.
If you're in Year 10 right now and picking your subjects - this decision is worth looking into properly before the end of term.

We put together a full guide on exactly this - what to consider and how to figure out which course is actually right for you.

If you have a child in Year 12 this year, this is definitely worth knowing about πŸ‘‡

University early entry applications are already open - and some of the earliest deadlines are coming up in July, which is much sooner than many families realise.

Early entry programs allow students to receive a university offer before their ATAR is released. Depending on the university, offers can be based on things like:
β€’ Year 11 results
β€’ School recommendations
β€’ Leadership or extracurricular involvement
β€’ Community service, sport, portfolios, or personal statements
β€’ Financial or other disadvantage

For a lot of students, receiving an early offer can take a huge amount of pressure off during the final months of Year 12. Having a pathway already lined up before exams and results day can make a real difference to stress and confidence levels.

There are also quite a few different early entry schemes available across universities, all with different requirements and timelines - which is why it’s important to start looking into them early rather than leaving it until later in the year.

Hopefully this helps make the process feel a little less overwhelming for families navigating Year 12 😊

Everything Year 12 students need to know about early entry - in one place. πŸ“Œ
Some of these deadlines are as close as July. Most students don't look at this until after the HSC. By then some programs are already closed.

Save this and share it with a Year 12 student who needs it πŸ‘‡

Extension 2 Maths is the hardest subject in the HSC. Here's what that actually means πŸ‘‡

It's not just harder content. It moves faster, the exam is more unforgiving, and unlike most HSC subjects there's almost nowhere to hide if you fall behind.

The students who do well in it aren't always the ones who are 'best at maths.' They're the ones who genuinely enjoy problem solving and have a solid Ext 1 foundation before they start.

Worth knowing before you commit to it - or drop it.
