📖 Strong readers don't memorise thousands of words.

They recognise patterns.

That's why explicit phonics instruction is so powerful.

Take these words:

🔠 field
🔠 chief
🔠 receive
🔠 ceiling

At first glance, they all look completely different.

But when children learn that IE and EI can both represent the long E sound, those tricky words suddenly become much easier to decode.

Every new spelling pattern is another tool added to a child's reading toolbox.

Instead of guessing...

They start noticing.

Instead of relying on memory...

They start recognising patterns.

And slowly, word by word, they become more fluent and more confident.

Because confidence isn't built by reading words you've memorised.

It's built by successfully reading words you've never seen before.

🎲 Try this quick game at home!

Pattern Detective 🕵️‍♀️

Set a timer for one minute and challenge your child to find as many **IE** or **EI** words as they can in a book, magazine or cereal box.

Every time they find one, ask:

✨ "Can you hear the long E sound?"

You'll be amazed how quickly they begin spotting patterns everywhere.

💛 Every child deserves the confidence to read independently.

💛 Every parent wants their child to succeed.

But after 13 years in education, I've noticed something.

The children who flourish aren't always the ones who spend the most hours studying.

They're the ones who believe they are capable.

The ones who aren't afraid to make mistakes.

The ones who put their hand up, ask questions and keep going when something feels difficult.

And that kind of confidence doesn't begin in a classroom.

It begins at home.

It grows every time a parent says,

"Let's try again."

"I'm proud of your effort."

"Mistakes help us learn."

"I believe in you."

Because children borrow our belief in them until they build their own.

Long before they become confident readers...

Confident writers...

Or confident speakers...

They need to become confident learners.

That's why I encourage parents to focus less on perfection and more on progress.

Celebrate the sentence they wrote.

The word they sounded out.

The question they were brave enough to ask.

Those little moments become the foundation for something much bigger.

Resilience.

Curiosity.

A love of learning.

And the quiet confidence that whispers,

"I can do hard things."

Because academic success is wonderful.

But raising a child who believes in themselves?

That's a gift that lasts a lifetime.

💛 **Every child has something to say. Every child is capable of extraordinary growth when someone believes in them.**

✍️ Every child has something to say.

Some children just haven't discovered how to say it yet.

I've taught children who could tell the most incredible stories...

But when I handed them a pencil, they'd freeze.

Not because they lacked imagination.

Not because they weren't intelligent.

But because writing can feel overwhelming when no one has shown you how to organise your thoughts.

The beautiful thing is this:

**Great writers aren't born. They're built.**

One sentence at a time.

One idea at a time.

One small success at a time.

When children are explicitly taught how to plan, expand their ideas, choose precise vocabulary and communicate with purpose, something incredible happens.

They stop worrying about what to write.

They start focusing on what they want to say.

And slowly, they begin to realise,

**"My ideas matter."**

Because writing isn't just an English skill.

It's how children tell their stories.

Share their opinions.

Express their creativity.

Advocate for themselves.

And one day...

Lead others.

That's why every writing lesson I teach is about so much more than paragraphs and punctuation.

It's about helping children find their voice and giving them the confidence to use it.

Did you know that the letter E can say its name all by itself in an open syllable?

Words like he, she, me, hero, and secret use the long E sound, helping children recognise important reading patterns and become more confident readers.

Understanding syllable types is a powerful step in building strong decoding skills, reading fluency, and spelling confidence.

The more patterns children understand, the easier reading becomes!

📩 Comment "PHONICS" and we'll send you simple activities to help your child master long vowel sounds at home.

Your child doesn't need more pressure. They need someone who believes in them.

After 13 years in education, I've watched hundreds of children walk into a classroom convinced they're "not good at writing," "not a reader" or "just not smart."

And almost every time, the problem isn't ability.

It's fear.

Fear of getting it wrong.

Fear of disappointing someone.

Fear that one mistake means they're not good enough.

So they stop trying.

Not because they don't want to learn...

But because protecting themselves feels safer than failing.

That's why I believe one of the greatest gifts we can give a child is a place where mistakes are expected, questions are celebrated and effort is noticed long before perfection.

Because confidence isn't built by hearing,

"You got 10 out of 10."

It's built by hearing,

"I'm proud of the way you kept going when it was hard."

Children flourish when they feel safe.

Safe to ask.

Safe to wonder.

Safe to struggle.

Safe to grow.

And when they experience that kind of environment, something beautiful happens.

They become willing to try.

And children who are willing to try become children who eventually succeed.

💛 Every child has something to say.

Sometimes they just need someone to believe in them long enough to discover their own voice.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One of my favourite moments as a teacher isn't when a child gets full marks.

It's the moment they look at their own work and quietly say,

"I didn't know I could do that."

Because that's the moment confidence begins.

This beautiful feedback about our poetry lessons isn't really about poetry.

It's about a child who felt supported enough to take risks, explore new ideas and discover their own voice.

That's what education should be.

Not simply memorising answers.

But nurturing curiosity.

Building resilience.

Encouraging creativity.

And helping children leave every lesson believing they are capable of more than they thought possible.

I'm incredibly grateful to the families who trust me with their children each week.

Watching them grow in confidence, find joy in learning and become thoughtful communicators is the greatest privilege of my job.

Because every child has something to say.

Sometimes they just need someone to help them discover their voice.

🌊🐠 Sometimes the world reminds you just how incredible it is.
For twenty minutes, I wasn't checking emails.
I wasn't thinking about work.
I wasn't planning next week's lessons.
I was simply standing beneath the ocean, surrounded by hundreds of fish, watching an entire world quietly exist beneath the waves.
And I couldn't stop smiling.
It made me think about the children I teach.
The best writers aren't always the ones with the biggest vocabulary.
They're the ones who notice.
The tiny crab hiding in the sand.
The way sunlight dances on water.
The curious little fish that swims right up to your mask before darting away.
Great writing doesn't begin with fancy words.

It begins with wonder.
With slowing down long enough to observe the world and appreciate its beauty.
I hope we never lose that childlike ability to be fascinated by ordinary things.
To ask questions.
To explore.
To look a little closer.

Because I have a feeling the children who grow up noticing the little things become the adults who do extraordinary things.
💙 What's something that made you stop and smile this week?

🧠 Why do children read words that don't even exist?
Because that's how we know they're actually reading.
When a child reads cat, they may have memorised it.
When they read lox, pim or nax, they can't rely on memory, pictures or guessing.
They have to use the most powerful reading strategy of all:
✨ Looking at every letter.
✨ Saying each sound.
✨ Blending them together.
That's called decoding, and it's one of the strongest predictors of future reading success.
🎲 Turn it into a 2-minute game!
Real or Robot? 🤖
Read each word aloud and ask your child:
👍 REAL WORD or 🤖 ROBOT WORD?
🟢 lox
🟢 monkey
🟢 pim
🟢 happy
🟢 hud
🟢 honey
🟢 nax
🟢 baby
Can they read every word before deciding?
The goal isn't to trick them.
The goal is to build a brain that confidently tackles any word, even one they've never seen before.
Because fluent readers don't memorise thousands of words.
They recognise patterns and decode with confidence.

💛 Just a few minutes of playful practice each day can make a world of difference.
Every child deserves the confidence to read independently.

📚 Every child deserves the confidence to read independently. ✨
When children struggle to read, it's rarely because they're "not trying hard enough."
More often, they simply haven't been taught to recognise the patterns hidden inside words.
Take the Long E sound.
It can be represented in multiple ways, including:
🔠 EY – key, monkey, honey
🔠 Y – happy, sunny, baby
To an experienced reader, these words feel effortless.
To a child who's still decoding, they can feel completely unrelated.
That's why explicit phonics instruction matters.
When children learn to recognise spelling patterns instead of memorising thousands of individual words, something incredible happens.
✨ They stop guessing.
✨ They start noticing patterns.
✨ They become more fluent.
✨ And most importantly... they begin to believe,
"I can do this."
Because confidence doesn't come from getting every word right.
It comes from understanding how our language works.

💛 Save this post to practise together at home and share it with another parent supporting a young reader.

Leaders aren't born tomorrow. They're born today.

They're sitting quietly in classrooms.

They're the child who knows the answer but is too nervous to raise their hand.

The child with brilliant ideas who can't quite find the words.

The child who whispers instead of speaks.

After 13 years in education, I've realised something that no report card can measure.

The children who change the world aren't always the ones with the highest marks.

They're the ones who learn to think critically.

To communicate with clarity.

To listen with empathy.

To stand behind what they believe.

To respectfully challenge ideas and inspire others to see a different perspective.

That's why I care so deeply about persuasive writing.

Because it isn't really about writing.

It's about giving children a voice.

It's about helping them realise that their thoughts matter, their ideas have value and their words have the power to create change.

Every week, I watch children come to my class unsure of themselves.

Then something incredible happens.

They begin to trust their own thinking.

They stop looking for the "right" answer and start discovering their own.

They learn to organise ideas, defend them with confidence and communicate with purpose.

And they leave standing just a little taller.

That's the kind of confidence that follows a child long after they leave primary school.

One day they'll interview for their dream job.

Lead a team.

Stand up for someone who needs a voice.

Raise children of their own.

Maybe even change the world.

And I believe that journey begins the moment a child discovers the courage to say,

"This is what I think, and here's why."

❤️ Term 3 | The Art of Persuasion | Years 2-6

Small classes.
Personal mentoring.
Big conversations.

For children who are ready to become confident thinkers, powerful communicators and compassionate future leaders.

Because changing the world doesn't begin in parliament or boardrooms.

It begins the first time a child discovers that their voice matters.

💛 If you'd love your child to become a more confident thinker, communicator and future leader, comment VOICE below and I'll personally send you the Term 3 information.
