Gratitude makes us happier.

But have you ever wondered where gratitude appears in Judaism?

Whatโ€™s fascinating is that gratitude isnโ€™t just encouraged in Jewish tradition. Itโ€™s woven into Jewish life.

The first words a Jew says each morning are Modeh Ani (โ€œI thank Youโ€). One of the few blessings explicitly commanded in the Torah is Birkat Hamazon, thanking G-d after we eat. Even the word Yehudi (Jew) comes from Yehudah, which is connected to the Hebrew root hodaโ€™ah - gratitude.

From the Torah to the Talmud, from King David to Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, gratitude appears again and again as a core Jewish value.

Perhaps gratitude isnโ€™t just a nice feeling.

Perhaps thatโ€™s our Jewish superpower.

๐Ÿ‘‡ What are you grateful for today? ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

For their light was not extinguished,
and their faith was not broken.
They were taken in sanctification of G-dโ€™s Name,
and for the sanctification of G-dโ€™s Name, we will live.

Teach us how to remove the darkness,
how to love, and how to protect one another.
Give us hope, joy, and faith.
Show us a light that will shine forever.

In memory of those murdered in the Bondi terror attack. May their memory be a blessing.

Rabbi Eli Schlanger, Boris Tetleroyd, Sofia Gurman, Reuven Morrison, Edith Brutman, Marika Pogรกny, Rabbi Yaakov Levitan, Peter Meagher, Tibor Weitzen, Alexander Kleytman, Dan Elkayam, Adam Smyth, Tania Tretiak, and Matilda.

Six months on.

What even is six months? It feels like yesterday, yet somehow it also feels like a lifetime ago. Time is strange like that. I still shiver in disbelief. In many ways, I am still in shock, still trying to process something so horrific that my mind struggles to make sense of it.

The first photo shows a minyan of men about to daven Mincha at Bondi Beach. The second, taken six months later, shows a memorial menorah standing in that exact spot. That holy, holy place where our kedoshim were murdered in cold blood for one reason alone: they were Jewish.

It will never make sense. It will never fully sink in. How can something so heartbreaking and unfathomable ever become fathomable? It canโ€™t.

And yet, alongside the pain, there is gratitude. Deep gratitude. Gratitude that I am here. Gratitude that my baby Meir is here. I do not take that for granted. Not for a second.

Six months ago, I was lying on the grass shielding my baby with my body. Today, I hold him even tighter and thank Hashem that we are alive. But my heart breaks knowing that others never got that chance. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ’”

The pain remains. The questions remain. But so does the Jewish people. So does our spirit.

And so I continue the work that matters to me, helping Jews feel stronger, prouder, and more connected to who they are.

Because I believe that is what our kedoshim would want.

And because the greatest response to those who tried to break us is to keep living, keep building, keep being proudly Jewish, and to repair this fractured world and bring the Redemption.

We are still here. And weโ€™re here to stay.

Am Yisrael Chai. ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธโœก๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ
