Imagine a future where you don’t just watch a concert, you step into it. Where you don’t just watch a movie but you enter the scene, moving through the action as if you were there.
This is the promise of next‑generation immersive media: technology that blends holograms, volumetric capture, and real‑time spatial computing to create experiences that feel alive.
Professor John McGhee from ADA's 3DX Lab is bringing this future to life with his 4DGS system.
More than two and half years in development, it combines a custom‑designed camera rig with more than 300 synchronized cameras, paired with a fully integrated capture and processing pipeline. Using AI to synthesise the images captured.
"This allows us to record people, performances, and objects as dynamic, high‑fidelity volumetric holograms, not flat video, but living 3D scenes you can move around, explore, and interact with," explains Prof. McGhee.
Prof. McGhee is already taking this research beyond the lab with a spin‑out company Radiant Jelly.
"Radiant Jelly is focused on commercialising next-generation volumetric capture and holographic media production technologies," he says.
"It's the kind of tech that will redefine the future of film, live music experiences, digital merchandise, and interactive digital worlds."
It's going to take being immersed in a creative work to whole new level.

A UNSW-led team has come up with a new way to identify distant “Star Wars” planets which orbit two suns.
These are called “circumbinary” planets, much like Tatooine in Star Wars (the real ones will know)
Using a new planet-finding method, researchers were able to detect hidden worlds that previous search methods completely missed.

🎓 Double degree – double opportunity 🎓
Lee Fernandes is a fourth-year Bachelor of Arts/Computer Science student and an active member of the UNSW community – with roles as an ADA Student Ambassador, a UNSW Engineering Student Ambassador and a student mentor.
“I really value roles that challenge me and allow me to use more than one skillset.”
His advice to any new students?
“It is ok to make mistakes, it is ok to take a bit longer with your degree, and it is ok to disconnect sometimes.”
“Make sure you are always reflecting on your mental wellbeing and taking the necessary steps to avoid mental fatigue. While you are here to learn, it is just as important to network and make new connections, and enjoy the many extracurricular activities UNSW offers – that is a part of the university experience.”
