Regulation is not about being perfect. It is about noticing when things feel off and gently guiding yourself back to a place of calm. Each return to balance is progress. 💜

When a child is in survival mode,
they’re not able to learn from consequences.

Not because they don’t care,
but because the part of the brain that reflects, connects,
and makes sense of things isn’t accessible in that moment.

So what looks like “not listening”
is often a child who quite literally can’t take anything in.
And that’s where we get it wrong.

We try to correct in the moment,
to impose consequences,
to push for accountability —
when the child in front of us
isn’t in a state to process any of it.

And punishment certainly doesn’t solve that.
It doesn’t teach.
It doesn’t build skill.
It doesn’t create understanding.

It simply adds fear to an already overwhelmed system,
and calls that learning.

But fear couldn’t be further from the goal,
so punishment isn’t even part of the equation.

Because the work isn’t to control behaviour —
it’s to build the capacity behind it.

And that only happens
when a child feels safe enough
to actually take something in.

That’s where the shift is.

Safety first.
Then skills.

Everything else follows. ❤️
