Alternative Brac University Essay Writing Issue Task

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐭: Educational institutions and testing organizations should rely primarily on automated technologies rather than human judgment when making important decisions because technology is generally more efficient and objective.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning. In developing and supporting your position, consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

π’πšπ¦π©π₯𝐞 𝐇𝐒𝐠𝐑-π’πœπ¨π«π’π§π  π‘πžπ¬π©π¨π§π¬πž: The increasing sophistication of artificial intelligence and automated systems has encouraged organizations to entrust important decisions to technology. Proponents argue that automated systems are more efficient, consistent, and free from human bias. While these advantages are significant, I disagree with the claim that important decisions should rely primarily on technology rather than human judgment. Technology should assist decision-makers, but human oversight remains essential because automated systems can make errors, fail to account for context and lack moral responsibility.

Supporters of automation correctly point out that technology can process information on a scale impossible for humans. In education, healthcare, finance and public administration automated systems can analyze vast amounts of data quickly and consistently. Unlike human evaluators, algorithms do not become tired, distracted or influenced by personal emotions. For example, automated grading systems can assess thousands of standardized tests within hours, allowing institutions to deliver results efficiently. In situations involving repetitive and clearly defined criteria, technology often outperforms human decision-makers.

However, efficiency should not be confused with accuracy or fairness. Automated systems are only as reliable as the data, assumptions, and programming on which they are based. When flaws exist within the system, those flaws can affect large numbers of people simultaneously. Unlike individual human errors, technological mistakes can be replicated at scale. A single programming defect may influence thousands of decisions before it is detected. Consequently, excessive reliance on automation can create systemic risks that are difficult to identify and correct.

Furthermore, many important decisions require contextual understanding that algorithms cannot fully replicate. Human judgment is often necessary when evaluating complex situations involving ethics, creativity, or unique circumstances. Consider university admissions. While algorithms can analyze grades and test scores, they may struggle to assess personal challenges, leadership experiences or exceptional achievements that do not fit predefined categories. Human evaluators can recognize nuances that technology may overlook.

Another limitation of technology is the absence of accountability. When an automated system produces an unfair outcome, determining responsibility can be difficult. Human decision-makers, by contrast, can explain their reasoning and be held accountable for their choices. In democratic societies, transparency and accountability are crucial, especially when decisions affect education, employment, healthcare or legal rights.

This does not mean technology should be rejected. On the contrary, the most effective approach combines the strengths of both humans and machines. Automated systems can improve efficiency, identify patterns and reduce routine workloads; while human experts provide oversight, contextual understanding and ethical judgment. Such a partnership minimizes the weaknesses of each and maximizes their strengths.

In conclusion, although technology offers substantial benefits in terms of speed and consistency, it should not be the primary authority in important decision-making processes. Human judgment remains indispensable for ensuring fairness, accountability and contextual understanding. Therefore, technology should serve as a powerful tool that supports, rather than replaces, human decision-makers.
