» ইনফরমাল Modal verb এর পরিবর্তে “Could” এবং
“May” ব্যবহার করুন

Modal verb হচ্ছে এক ধরণের “সাহায্যকারী ক্রিয়া
(helping verb)” যেগুলো মূলত অনুমতি,
প্রয়োজনীয়তা কিংবা সম্ভাবনা প্রকাশ করে।
উদাহরণস্বরূপ, “Tim can direct the project.”

বাক্যটিতে can শব্দটি একটি modal verb হিসেবে কাজ
করছে। এর মানে হচ্ছে প্রজেক্টটি পরিচালনা করার
জন্য Tim অনুমতি পেয়েছে। ইংরেজিতে, কিছু কিছু
modal verb অন্যগুলোর চেয়ে অধিকতর ফরমাল
কিংবা মার্জিত বলে বিবেচিত হয়। নিচে কিছু প্রচলিত
উদাহরণ উল্লেখ করা হলো।
» Can ব্যবহারের পরিবর্তে could ব্যবহার করুন। এটি
বিশেষত প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞাসা করার ক্ষেত্রে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

» Might এর পরিবর্তে may ব্যবহার করুন।
I may schedule the meeting for Friday, depending
on her schedule.

» প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞাসা করার সময় অথবা অনুমতি
বোঝানোর ক্ষেত্রে can এর আরেকটি বিকল্প
হতে পারে May শব্দটি।

সংক্ষিপ্ত টার্মগুলো এড়িয়ে চলুন

» সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপগুলোকে ফরমাল লিখিত ইংরেজিতে
সাধারণত সম্পূর্ণরূপে লেখা হয়।
উদাহরণস্বরূপ, কথোপকথনের সময় আমরা সাধারণত
cell phone বা mobile phone এর পরিবর্তে cell ব্যবহার
করি, examination এর পরিবর্তে exam বলি, television
না বলে কেবল telly বা TV বলি এবং photograph এর
পরিবর্তে pic ব্যবহার করে থাকি। ফরমাল ইংরেজিতে,
বিশেষ করে লেখার সময় এগুলোর পূর্ণরূপ
লিখতে হবে।

শুধুমাত্র ASAP লেখার পরিবর্তে এর পূর্ণরূপ as soon

» Tons, loads কিংবা heaps এর মতো ক্যাজুয়াল
শব্দগুলো এড়িয়ে চলুন।
এগুলোর পরিবর্তে আপনি many, much অথবা
several ব্যবহার করতে পারেন।
ইনফরমাল: “I have tons of books on this topic at
home.”
ফরমাল: “I have several books on this topic at
home.”

একইভাবে, টেক্সট মেসেজিং এর সময়, বন্ধুদের
সাথে কথা বলার সময় কিংবা ইন্টারনেট ব্রাউজিং এর সময়
আমরা যেসব কথ্য শব্দ ব্যবহার করি সেসব শব্দ
ফরমাল পরিবেশে এমনকি ইমেইল লেখার সময়
পরিত্যাগ করুন।
তাই ফরমাল প্রসঙ্গে কেউ যদি হাস্যকর কিছু বলে বা
লিখে তাহলেও আপনার জন্য “lol :)” বা “lmao” বা
“omg!” লিখে বা বলে জবাব দেয়া বুদ্ধিমানের কাজ
হবে না।
কথ্য বুলির পরিবর্তে আপনি “That is hilarious!” অথবা
এরকম কিছু বলে আপনার অভিব্যক্তি প্রকাশ করতে
পারেন।
