Last month, Grade 10 students participated in a Mock Trial which was the culminating summative assessment for an English unit on the play, “The Crucible”. The Crucible, which centres around the Salem Witch Trials, follows John Proctor, a man who sacrifices his life by choosing integrity and truth, and Abigail Williams, who creates mass hysteria to escape persecution. For the trial, students were either an attorney for the prosecution, an attorney for the defence or a witness. Mrs O'Meara's class conducted "The People versus John Proctor" and Mrs Bethel's class tried "The People versus Abigail Williams"; the class not in trial served as the jurors. As IB learners, the students had to not only prepare evidence and work collaboratively ahead of the trials, but they also had to communicate effectively during the trials, thinking on their feet and responding appropriately. Before the trial, a local attorney and LCIS parent visited Grade 10 to offer words of advice and to help prepare them.
