𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞!
Our Bio Fab lab is currently conducting an intensive hands-on training covering the full workflow of sample collection, DNA extraction, PCR amplification, gel electrophoresis, purification, quantification using nano drop and Fluorometer, and real-time sequencing using the 𝗢𝘅𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 from Oxford Nanopore Technologies, together with the smart, portable 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗮𝗯.
For the first time, our laboratory is performing the complete workflow from sample to scientific information in-house. The training has included field sampling and eDNA collection, and the field applicability, portability, and ease of use of these modern technologies. The team is now moving into the bioinformatics phase, where sequencing data will be analysed and interpreted to generate meaningful biological insights.
The Bento Lab is an innovative all-in-one portable molecular laboratory that integrates PCR, centrifugation, and gel electrophoresis into a compact system, making molecular biology possible even in remote locations. As part of the training, the team will be conducting on-field bird sexing, demonstrating how the entire workflow — from sampling to results — can be performed directly in the field.
This initiative is a strong personal and institutional collaboration and our commitment to continue developing molecular research capacity and strengthening the BioFab laboratory. We extend our sincere appreciation to Mr. Pema Khandu, PhD researcher at Texas State University, for his invaluable collaboration and support.
Special thanks also to our facilitator and expert Karma Wangchuk for his dedication and effort in guiding this exciting venture.
This training is joined by a core faculty team along with a final year Animal Science research student.
