Meet Laone Phoebe Moshoboro, affectionately known as “Lala”, one of Botswana’s representatives at the African Individual Chess Championship 2026 taking place in Jwaneng from 18–26 June 2026.

Hometown: Molepolole

Laone has already etched her name into Botswana chess history by becoming the youngest person in Botswana to earn the Woman Candidate Master (WCM) title at the remarkable age of 7. She later went on to become the Botswana Women’s National Chess Champion at the age of 16.

“It is truly an honour to represent my country, to raise the blue, black and white flag and to show the amazing talents Batswana have.”

Message to Young Players
“I encourage young players to play chess because it is fun and has great benefits. It improves concentration, cognitive imagination, and the ability to think ahead. Do not get discouraged when you lose your games; keep your head high and learn from disappointments. You never know how many opportunities chess may bring into your future.”
