Good news for our planet’s forests, but there’s more work ahead! According to the new Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)’s Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025, global deforestation has slowed in every region. Forests now cover 4.14 billion hectares, or one-third of Earth’s land area.
✅Forest loss fell from 10.7 million hectares in the 1990s to 4.12 million hectares in 2015–2025.
✅Over half are under management plans
✅About 20% are in protected areas
✅Forest carbon stocks are increasing
But we’re still losing 10.9 million hectares each year, reminding us that protecting forests is essential to tackling climate change, safeguarding biodiversity, and community resilience.
