The Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) and the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), paving the way for a transformative partnership focused on innovation, sustainability, and value addition in Botswana’s livestock and meat industry.

The collaboration will leverage BIUST’s research expertise and BMC’s industry experience to develop practical solutions in areas such as animal nutrition, food safety, cold chain technology, automation, energy efficiency, and product development.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, BIUST Vice Chancellor, Professor Elisha Shemang, reaffirmed the University's commitment to supporting Botswana’s economic transformation through impactful research and strategic industry partnerships.

Acting BMC CEO, Ms Mmabasotho Tibe, highlighted the partnership’s potential to unlock new commercial opportunities, strengthen competitiveness, improve sustainability, and expand access to international markets through innovative technologies.

Together, BIUST and BMC are demonstrating how academia and industry can work hand in hand to drive innovation, industrial growth, food security, and sustainable development for Botswana.

The Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) recently hosted a four-day Leadership Transition and Strategic Alignment Retreat, bringing together members of Executive Management and Senior Leadership. The retreat reflected the University’s renewed commitment to strengthening collective leadership effectiveness, fostering institutional cohesion, and enhancing strategic alignment across all levels of the organisation.

The retreat provided a platform for robust discussions on operational excellence, sustainable growth, institutional strategic priorities, and performance alignment. Participants engaged in meaningful deliberations aimed at reinforcing BIUST’s long-term vision and positioning the University for continued success.

Delivering the keynote address, BIUST Council Chairman, Dr. H.K. Sigwele, emphasized the importance of continuity, innovation, and collaborative leadership in advancing BIUST’s mandate as a leading institution in science, engineering, and technology education in Botswana and beyond.

Dr. Sigwele further challenged the leadership team to work collectively towards positioning BIUST among the top ten universities in Africa by 2030. He underscored that achieving this ambitious goal would require an unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement.

The retreat concluded with a dinner that provided participants with an opportunity to reflect on the discussions and resolutions reached during the sessions, while also strengthening professional relationships and fostering collaboration among colleagues.

Through ongoing engagement with its leadership, staff, and other stakeholders, BIUST remains committed to cultivating a high-performance culture founded on excellence, integrity, transparency, and accountability. The University continues to promote an inclusive and collaborative environment that supports its mission of delivering transformative education, impactful research, and meaningful societal contribution.

MINISTER KGAFELA-MOKOKA PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO BIUST

The Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Hon. Nono Kgafela-Mokoka, paid a courtesy visit to the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), where discussions focused on strengthening collaboration in support of the rollout of Botswana’s upcoming STEAM-driven curriculum and other shared priorities.

Welcoming the Minister, Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Elisha Shemang highlighted BIUST’s commitment to producing industry-ready graduates through innovative teaching approaches, including problem-based learning that equips students to identify real-world challenges and develop practical solutions.

Prof. Shemang also emphasized BIUST’s efforts to nurture well-rounded graduates by integrating essential soft skills such as project planning, business, report writing and foreign language proficiency into its academic programmes. He further showcased the University's outreach initiatives that inspire and support learners and educators through STEM and STEAM programmes, including National Science Week, the GEMS Programme, teacher training initiatives and the recently launched STEAM Power Lab.

Hon. Kgafela-Mokoka commended BIUST for its forward-looking approach and underscored the importance of a STEAM curriculum that combines technical knowledge with creativity, critical thinking and social awareness. She noted that collaboration between the Ministry and BIUST will be critical in supporting curriculum implementation, teacher development and learner exposure to practical STEAM experiences.

The visit reaffirmed a shared commitment to advancing education, innovation and human capital development as Botswana continues its journey towards a knowledge-based economy.

The Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), through the collective efforts of its staff and students from various departments, joined hands with members of the Khurumela community to successfully conduct the second leg of the university’s clean-up initiative in support of the ongoing Presidential National Clean-Up Campaign.

The initiative forms part of BIUST’s social responsibility programmes aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness, sustainability and community well-being.

Participants actively took part in the collection and proper disposal of waste materials across designated areas within Khurumela Ward, demonstrating a shared commitment towards creating cleaner and healthier communities.

The event was graced by the Kgosi of Khurumela Ward, Ms Elizabeth Loso, who emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining clean and sustainable environments.

Speaking during the event, the Ward Councilor, Mr Molaimang Nkganetsang, commended the strong collaboration between BIUST and the local community, highlighting the importance of partnerships in advancing national development initiatives. He further noted that such initiatives promote unity, volunteerism and shared responsibility among community members.

The clean-up campaign not only contributed to improving the cleanliness of the area but also reinforced the spirit of civic engagement and environmental stewardship among participants.

BIUST remains committed to promoting environmental sustainability, civic responsibility and meaningful community engagement through initiatives that contribute positively to national development.

The Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) and the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening collaboration in innovation, research commercialisation, entrepreneurship, and economic transformation.

This strategic alliance represents more than a partnership, it is the coming together of two key entities committed to transforming research into real-world impact, empowering young innovators, and driving Botswana’s industrialisation agenda.
A major highlight of the collaboration includes the development of an AI-powered Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Solution, bringing together BIUST researchers and BITC professionals to deliver innovative solutions for national development.

The partnership also seeks to strengthen links between academia, industry, investors, and entrepreneurship while creating opportunities for students, researchers, and local communities.

Together, BIUST and BITC are cementing a shared vision for a knowledge-driven, innovation-led, and sustainable economy.
