South Africa 🇿🇦 is moving ahead with plans for a high-speed rail network. The main routes will link Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and Limpopo, including Johannesburg to Musina and Durban (eThekwini) to Johannesburg.
Travel times will be much shorter. Pretoria to Polokwane could take only 90 minutes instead of about five hours, and Johannesburg to Durban will be nearly three hours quicker.
Feasibility studies are still underway, including the KZN–Gauteng corridor. About 30 companies have already shown interest, and the government is preparing to release a Request for Proposals.
Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2026, with the first trains expected to run around 2030.
