Flourish - with Yvonne Silver

Yesterday evening I had the privilege of being invited to participate in the BPW Calgary (Business & Professional Women's Club) annual candle lighting ceremony, representing the United Kingdom.

Originally formed in 1927 by Nellie McClung, a member of the “Famous Five,” BPW Calgary became one of the six Charter Members of the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women’s clubs established in 1930. Globally, BPW holds General Consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council through BPW International.

The candle lighting ceremony holds significance for this global organization, which has a mandate of "women supporting working women" - to lift each other up. When one candle is lit it can light others all over the world - one candle, touching one other candle - to illuminate possibility for more global equality for women.

It was also a privilege to listen to the Honourable Emma R. Sarne Considerate General of the Philippines, speaking about the economic corridor and opportunities for collaboration between Canada and the Philippines, especially in industries where women entrepreneurs can flourish.

Thank you to the BP leadership team, including Maria Kim (current Mentorship Chair) for your kind invitation to participate in the Mentorship graduation ceremony, which was the centre-point of this evening event. It was lovely to hear that over $1500 in scholarship money was raised in 3-hours, to go to deserving Bow Valley students, providing three scholarships to ease financial burdens. It was especially rewarding to hear the impact that the BPW Mentorship program has made this year (and over previous years) and see the ladies' evolution and career advancement in action.

This is a truly special organization that is almost 100 years old in Canada and actively putting resolutions forward to parliament to change the laws in favour of women’s rights. I highly recommend exploring membership options and getting engaged if you also believe that women deserve more. Actions speak louder than words sometimes...
