One of our favourite events is movie nights because they give our students a safe place to play, make friends, chill, and bond outside of class time. 🤸♀️🍕🧃🐀🇫🇷🥖🍿
This past month, we hosted a movie night to help support some of our young black belts go to Toronto this July to participate in the annual CAF Summer Camp to grow their aikido technique. From this experience, they hope to use the technical teaching from high-level instructors across the country to advise and better Bigrock’s technical ability. Thanks to all who participated and we can’t wait for the next movie night!

Congratulations Sally for achieving Shodan!! Sally tested last year during the 2025 CAF Summer Camp. We were able to award her belt before she left to university last fall, and the certificate came this past week. Sally has been a pillar of BigRock Aikikai for over a decade, with her dedication to technique, unique ways of confusing her students into behaving, and always being a true team player. No matter where life might lead you, always remember that the bigrock fam misses you!❤️

Doing the Right Thing - At Aikido
Character is defined by what we do when no one is watching. We shed light on core virtues, helping young children develop a strong moral compass. By learning to make honourable choices on the mat, children build the internal strength to do the right thing at home, in the classroom, and on the mat.
Through aikido, children develop the self-discipline needed to take full responsibility for their words and actions
Highlights from our latest youtube video highlighting Leadership skills at Bigrock Aikikai!
Learning aikido from young instructors is beneficial to younger students for many reasons, but most importantly teaches this practice teaches respect among all students involved. Respect is a core value of our instructional team - without the understanding that all students regardless of rank or age are needed to uphold our diverse dojo, we would not have any community. Joining the Instructor Training Program gives students an incredible space to be held accountable, learn through technical teaching, develop confidence and teaches a growth mindset through consistent improvement
If you would like to tryout a trial class if you feel inspired for yourself or a family member to gain these skills, please send us a DM or email the admin team at [email protected] for more information!

Congratulations Ethan for passing his first kyu test a few weeks back at the spring seminar!
Over the past few years, Ethan has shown an intense passion for aikido and bettering our dojo. He is always willing to help out on and off the mat by leading activities and large technique groups, assisting our young instructors as they navigate teaching, or taking out the garbage after big camps. He handles all tasks thrown at him his humility and care. We can’t wait to see what you accomplish next!

The Oath of Transmission
A legacy is not just something we receive; it is something we carry.
We in the Canadian Aikido community have been profoundly blessed. For decades, we have stood on the shoulders of giants who shaped the very foundation of our practice.
The Foundation & The Vision
Kawahara Sensei was our architect. He united us from coast to coast under the single banner of the CAF, instilling the discipline and unity that allow us to flourish today.
The Living Lesson
Our current Technical Director, Osawa Sensei, is a rare bridge between unparalleled technical mastery and deep humanity. His care for his Canadian students is unmistakable—it lives in the passion of his teaching, the precision of his movement, and the uncompromisingly high standards he holds us to.
The Promise
To honor what has been given to me, I have composed a poem that now resides above our Kamiza. It serves as a permanent oath—a promise to do everything in my power to transmit Osawa Sensei’s lessons to the next generation.
受法愛護 Receive the law under loving protection.
深悟正道 Awaken to its true essence through deep understanding.
以心伝心 Transmit it, heart to heart.
Deep gratitude to Shodo Shihan Mami Humphreys (sho-artworks.com) for bringing these words to life with such powerful brushwork.
