🌱 What Do You Have in Common With a Seed? 🌱

Are you feeling clever, adventurous, or maybe even a little secretive? So are seeds! This week, our learners are exploring what makes seeds so incredible and what we might have in common with them.

From ancient seeds that still sprout, to tiny seeds growing into towering trees, we’re diving into the fascinating world of plant science. We even watched a real-time seed transformation (thanks to a time-lapse video!), then the learners had to think about what they need to grow... whether it’s the right environment, support, or daily habits.

And it doesn’t stop there! The learners worked as a Seed Team to build a plant light maze. Every team member will record their own discoveries as we see what happens when science and curiosity meet!

Our learners have been fully immersed in the world of creative fiction this week! Using StoryJumper, each writer is bringing their own story to life, building unique characters and worlds that are entirely their own.

This week, we focused on crafting a strong beginning. Learners worked on introducing their characters, describing the worlds they live in, and creating that all-important “enticing event”... the moment that turns everything upside down and launches the adventure.

It’s been inspiring to watch everyone work at their own pace, letting their ideas unfold. We can’t wait to see where their stories go next!

Why do plants need water and how do they actually drink it? 💧🌸

This week in the Community Garden Quest, our learners explored one of nature’s coolest secrets: capillary action. With celery, flowers, and a splash of food coloring, they conducted hands-on science experiments to observe how water travels up stems... without a single pump.

💡 But this quest wasn’t just about experiments. It sparked big conversations about:
🌍 The evolution of agriculture
🍎 GMOs and food ethics
🌱 How human innovation shapes our future with plants

🌱 Learning in the Garden: The Photosynthesis Challenge! 🌞

This week at Acton Academy Calgary West, our learners have been digging into science... literally! In our Community Garden Quest, young scientists are investigating one of nature’s most fascinating superpowers: photosynthesis.

Here’s a glimpse of what’s been happening in our studio:

✨ Big Questions:

What would you save if you could choose - an animal species or a plant species?

Is it our responsibility to prevent plant extinction, even if it’s not our fault?

Why are plants so important for the future of our planet?

🌿 Hands-On Science:
Learners became real scientists, designing and conducting their own experiments:

Comparing plants kept in sunlight vs. darkness to see the difference light makes.

Covering part of a leaf to watch how chlorophyll reacts to sunlight (or the lack of it!).

Exploring how plants produce oxygen through hands-on chemical experiments.

Every observation is carefully recorded, and each learner gets to form their own hypothesis and draw conclusions. True learner-led discovery in action!

By exploring how plants work and why they matter, our learners are building real-world scientific skills and developing a deeper sense of responsibility for the environment.
