The son of Holocaust Survivors, architect Avi Friedman grew up hearing stories of unimaginable cruelty.

After transcribing a recording of a conversation he'd had in 1995 with his father, Chaim, Friedman was inspired to follow in his footsteps, visiting scenes of Chaim's experiences in the Polish army, as a slave labourer subjected to barbaric cruelty, and as the sole survivor in his family.

Accompanied by his own son, and by Chaim's voice on tape, he also visited locations where Chaim's seven siblings, parents, nieces and nephews had lived, and the sites where they were murdered.

Sole Survivor is available wherever fine books are sold.

Thorough and balanced, including many voices, and Freeman takes the time to clarify what it means to consult each source. Reading this book is like listening to a speaker who allows time for each word to sink in.
